What's the optimal server OS: Ubuntu 16.04 or WinServer2012 R2 (Standard)

Apologies in advance if this has been asked before; I spent thirty minutes searching over the past few days and have not found an answer.

Simply which will be easier for setup of Akka and community's incrediable setup/deployment and later, limited custom work? I purchased a dedicated Xeon server tower to run my server but was surprised to find that Win7 wasn't a supported OS I also have the option of Ubuntu 14.04 but assumed the later version was preferable due to some enhancements I reviewed between the two.

While it may be costlier to get a WinSvr2012 license, perhaps there are enough challenges ahead of me to at least be familiar with moving around the Windows platform. I have been a heavy windows user since I got my first computer. That's the only reason I was thinking of buying a Server2012 license instead of going with the the Linux OS. Obviously an EOL is coming up in 2023 for Server2012 but at that point either a Linux migration or an OS upgrade will not be as daunting since the server will be up & running.

In terms of performance for 1-4 players, possible change to offline only, and security is there a clear winner between the two? I don't plan on doing a lot of customization but some of the things on EZ server like instancing, universal teleporter, buff bots and a few custom zones are on the agenda.

There's likely plenty of bias to be given, but if there are inherit limitations of one, ease of use or performance gains, etc. perhaps a heads up and two cents from a few of the veterans around here?

I'm not sure where you picked up the not running on Win7.

I think you may still be able to run on XP..but, I haven't tested that of late.

Compiling is the issue due to Visual Studio requirements.

I haven't seen any recent comparisons..but, have always heard that linux runs a smaller footprint.

Just to clarify the hardware won’t run Win7, while the EQ compiler is smooth with Win7. Thank you for the reply. Hoping for others to chime in too :)

Well certain Xeon's do work with windows 7. Also as a side note the requirements to run a server pretty easily arent that high to be honest.
I've got my eq on a single core 1.8ghz laptop with 3 gigs of ram on a 5400rpm hDD and I can run about 50 zones at a time.
And it was tested to run around 35 people at once without a problem.
But back to the original topic, If you could post your motherboard and xeon processor your using, we can double check the compatibility.

I have run a server on windows and linux. Personally I like windows because its a little more user friendly.
And there isn't any restrictions to use windows compared to linux besides the obvious that linux is a little less resource intensive.

Yeah, that was my bad..hadn't had enough coffee yet and the words just melted together.

Here's the intel link and excerpt from the configuration. I initially installed Win7 but none of the onboard devices worked, including the LAN port, after the first bootup and reboot. I then discovered Win7 wasn't supported with the configuration.

I went with Windows Server 2012 R2 and when I finally figured out how all the licenses worked for users, devices, etc. I ran the installer and it worked great. There were some confusing parts that I had to dig around in threads for answers. I've been taking notes along the way and am going to put together a 2018 refresh of installation instructions for those that follow behind me.

Now I just have to figure out how to edit PERL/LUA and get connected to the EOC 2.0. I've got to ask for help getting connect to EOC in a separate thread as I have been digging through posts and haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Thank you all for the input!
