On New Server Now

All,

I just wanted to post and let everybody know that we have officially moved to our new server now. More details and what not will be coming eventually, I just wanted to give a little status. Please post if you notice anything wrong with the new setup.

On the IRC end:
You didn't compile in support for showing & and ~ channel ranks. I believe it's an option in the configure script; if you just rerun configure and say yes where you said no, then recompile it should be fine.

LE and Rog servers are not connected. Dunno if that's a misconfiguration on your end or if they haven't changed their config to your new IP.

the only thing wrong with the new setup ive noticed is that whenever i try to log in i cant. I always get a window popping up saying "everquest has encountered a problem and must shut down, please close". i have to try logging in again for another 30 times until it works, so im just wondering, whats wrong with that?

Darkonig 06-06-2007 03:31 AM

It has nothing at all to do with which 'server' is hosting eqemulator.net.
The problem is with the public login server code. Everyone is having this issue and will continue to have it until the login server code is changed, if ever.
See http://www.eqemulator.net/forums/showthread.php?t=22521

kind of begs the question, if we moved servers, why was the code twiddled with. wouldnt it have been prudent ( i know its now water under the bridge)
to migrate the existing snapshot to the new service and establish a stable footprint before doing any mods/upgrades?

just a curiousity question, if what dark is saying is true. if the the installed snapshot is the same as the older , then it would probably point to something provider side.

if all this pondering is off the mark, then merely dismiss it as ramblings of an old fart developer [career-wise, i'm not "one of the eqemu devs" :-) ]

login server code did not appear to be changed. It had that same problem before the move, but with all the new players it just appears to be happening more often.
I play 13 characters several times a week and maybe one or 2 of them will get this error (not always the same character) and when they do get it, it may require only 1 more login attempt or it has taken already more than 20.
But it is not consistent, the only variable found was in packet captures of what the login server sent. If it sent 'Survey packets' the client crashed. If it did not sent 'Survey packets' it did not crash. This behavior did not change at all when the hosting changed.

There have been quirks with the public login server since I've been around. Blank servers, servers with 7123847893 players, gpf's, no connections, blah blah blah. I think it's just more obvious now because of the influx of new players. And us old(er) timers were just used to it. ;)

surprising. before the move i NEVER got the dialog box failure that has been dubbed the SSSE, in about 9 monthes of tooling around with the emu. now all of sudden i get it and fairly frequently. i havent changed/altered/modded my client install either.

but then, i might just have been "lucky" until now.

I have all the "example" clients here with firewalls, routers ect. and have seen all these problems before.
When I post a solution, it's because I had that problem (or something very much like it) and fixed it. Even if these solutions don't help, they will help speed up your connection and tweak it. If you plan to run a server, even just for yourself or a few friends, you really should consider not running stuff like "bearshare" or "chat" sessions and leave the machine clean and only with the server and if only one machine, the client.
I can guarantee you Bearshare (and its wanna-bes) fills your PC up with Malware and crap that owns your bandwidth.
If you run open chats (msn, icq, etc), some of the garbage-people will hack into your pc and commandeer your pc.
If you like to look a porno or like to surf the "gutters" of the internet, you're asking for big trouble there too: You can get screwed with malware and garbage just by browsing a site.
Right now, you might be the proud owner of one of the millions of internet computer "Zombies" that pump out tons of daily spam and garbage while you think all is well.
If you are not careful, even a single email from a friend (who thinks he has nothing), will screw you into oblivion.
I can't count the number of people around here that brought me their "broken" PC's here only to find out it was over run by virus and malware they were unaware of.
Crap like this will affect your Everquest and strange stuff will happen: login server not found, eqgame.exe crashes, etc.
I found these problems by trial and error and the solutions were found while trying to help others get rid of some very stubborn trojans;
http://www.eqemulator.net/forums/sho...8&postcount=17
and
http://eqemulator.net/forums/showpos...7&postcount=25

Finally, as a rule of thumb, nothing in the internet is free! if it's not a download from a known site, don't take it!

No, I do agree with you - it is definitely more common now (or was, anyway). I personally rarely ever got hosed trying to log in - but I have read thread upon thread over the last year of people constantly having these odd issues. Sometimes I'd get it. But 99 out of 100 tries, I was fine. Until the last few weeks.

However, I am happy to report (again) I am all over the login server like teenage girls on Justin Timberlake at an autograph signing, and I have zero crashes or failures to connect. Maybe this was all tied to the server move/DNS issues. Or, not.

Oh man was that funny. Just the other day in the news there was a bunch of girls saying that they were all over Justin like John Adams was on the EqEmu loginserver after a DNS party.

Weird I know!

John Adams 06-12-2007 01:36 AM

Kookey!

btw, no sooner did I post that, and I crashed! sigh!
