Project Omens

I started a new server thread for something that was a simple experiment, but it has
become a long term project, as I feel more serious about it now. Even though it's
a project that's just getting started with lots of work to do to for development, the
work will continue with anyone who feels like playing on it.
I am not concerned about attracting a player base right now, but for anyone who
does log on, it's goals are going to be very strictly driven into the OoW era, including
content, loot, NPC's, etc., as development moves forward.
If a player finds out of era items or loot, be forewarned, it may disappear without
notice. Something you see today, may not be there tomorrow, or for that matter,
3 months from now. Forums have been setup for player info, getting started, support
as well as posting updates about the server's development progress. Please direct
all support questions there : http://projectomens.boards.net/
NOTE: Server has been rebooted from it's former name on list (Alpha OoW)
Thank You for your patience :)

Sad to see you give up your other project for this waste of time.

What makes you think I "gave up" on the other project ? It's still on the move.
(I am that capable) Some even think a keyboard and mouse is work, haha. But it's
the laziest job in the world (to me) :P Carrying 100 lb sacks all day or wheeling
concrete around is what I call work. This is relaxing meditation that I can go for
hours on. I know time is a factor for some, but I own the clock on the wall :)

Why would a server that's specific to me (this one) be a waste of time ? Most
always assume, that the infamous "population" is the priority for putting a server
up for public play. I only have 2 interests in EQ. Either fully era specific, or fully
custom. No grey areas for me, but I am going to have both, even if it kills me,
haha

By the way, if anyone is interested in keeping an eye on the work progression going into this
project I have a changelog page setup on the server forum site. Here is a direct link to it.

I’ll keep up with the server. I hope you have fun with it. There’s a lot that goes in to era-specific servers. Take a look at P99, they’re as close to classic as anyone has ever been, but even to this day they’re still updating, changing, and fixing things. They have a team of several people that are working together to do this, and it has still taken years to get as accurate as they are. Doing this as a lone-wolf is going to be super challenging unless you have 10-12 hours a day for a year to dedicate.

Thank You. I definately have a long road ahead with this project, but I also have more
time on my hands now than average people. 10-12 hours is an average day for me.
To make a long story short, I busted my spine awhile back and it wasn't caught right
away. Took 7 months for me to find out, (further disc damage, etc) but in the end,
I'm retired younger than I should be. I'm not glued to a wheel chair or anything, but I
am definately glued to this puter now, haha

Just wanted to mention, the forums I setup for the server are not limited to only players on
that server. Discussions can be started there, regardless of whether one plays on it or not.
I don't want to be that "closed minded", ;)
I have to apologize for a mistake I made when I set the forums up. The "guest posting"
was supposed to be disabled, but I didn't realize I overlooked that, until I saw one today.
It's been corrected to it's intentions now.
Also, the server forums main function of being there for support topics and equally
important, the need for players to gain info before they choose to logon to the server.
Today, I made a little change in the ruleset to encourage this practice by setting the required
level for chat to 5. It's not a matter of just visiting the forum for the client files, it's important
to read the rest of the info, so you don't find yourself logging on to the server with a level 1 toon,
asking questions already answered on the forums site. That info is for player benefit, not mine.
I appreciate your patience and understanding. :)

If you remember your thread about no emu server is for you.. everyone said no matter what server you make, someone always has a way to make it better other than them actually proven they can make it better themselves... You have literally done this every step of the way.

Makes a test server for you. You didn't like the name, you wanted guild hall and lobby. Keep drakkin. Keep defiant. Keep it updated past OoW.

GRUMPY 05-12-2018 08:30 PM

Server was briefly down while ISP was doing something stupid <shrug>
My 175 connection was down to 9 Mbps, so I had to patiently wait until
the slow spell from ISP wore off :P It's good to go again.

Just thought I would give you (and others) a heads up on some changes I made to the
server forums. It's been re-organized, (categories, etc), but also some settings have
changed and a couple of sections are not viewable by non-forum members. They will
however, be able to view those sections after signing up on the forum, which is just
as simple of a procedure as here. ;) The changes I made are more focused on the
server being in development and, for more practical reaons to reflect on that. I
appreciate anyone's understanding and having patience with me. Thanks :)

Well, server has been up for two weeks now, but i find something fascinating
about the fact it's a regular type of grind, without all that modern QoL one
commonly sees, but in that two weeks, one of the few active players has one
of his single toons up to level 58 already without having the privilege of
boxing a group.
No auto skills/spells, no custom porters, no gear vendors, OOC regen disabled,
no exp boosts, etc."Most" out of era amenities kept out of the game.
Maybe higher end content will put limits on the toon, but he still likes to
solo as far it can go. (I think he mentioned he likes the challenge).
During future development, the high end of the game will have mobs toned down
to a one-full group doable status, but with difficulty. But the server will
maintain it's ruleset including max 2-box, regardless of population (0 or not).
It's fun to watch a player enjoy the challenge as he does it himself. No fear.

GRUMPY 05-30-2018 01:14 AM

Server has been updated with both code and maps, etc., adding the new Navmesh Pathing technology,
Thanks to the author KLS :) I was anxious to start using this, as it looked both intriguing and positive.

GRUMPY 05-31-2018 10:48 AM

This is the reason my server had been experiencing interruptions over a couple days.
It's the craziest storm weather we've ever had around here. It's HAIL, not snow, haha.

https://image.ibb.co/fRW3Ly/Hail_piles.png

GRUMPY 06-05-2018 05:17 AM

Many mobs level 65 plus that were otherwise impossible by a group are now doable by a
full group, with difficulty. Good Gear and AA's will help :)
NOTE: I will continue working on Raid Bosses, BUT most NPC "special abilities", spell sets
and scripts are still in place, until I get to them. Be forewarned, without assumptions.
Still a work in progress ......
EDIT: Removed quad attacks on all mobs, as well as removing the "immune to slow" from
all mobs 65+

GRUMPY 06-07-2018 01:34 PM

I remember going to a game store and buying this, as soon as it was released.
My first piece of gear I looted from WoS was Sleeves of Constriction which I
won the "dice roll" in our group for it, haha

Project Omens will be in full beta mode on June 29th and will be up 24/7
on a permanent basis with 99.8% uptime. There will never be any character
wipes on this server, regardless of low population. I still have toons on
live from 2003/4, so it's not considered "out of era" to keep old junk
around. (like some of the very helpful threads on these forums) <wink>
Even now, there is 40+ dorment accounts with low level (or newbie) toons
that haven't been played in awhile, but they will always be there in case
of an "itch" down the road.

Backups are done every 12 hours (minimum), stored off server. I always
keep modern hardware going but the last hard drive that ever calfed on
me had an original Win 98 install. I think it had moving parts and we ran
Bahamut IRC servers on it. :P

So far, since launch, in the last month, there have been no bug reports
or complaints posted by any casual active players. That's positive right?
One player who has chosen to solo grind a mage all the way to level 70,
has communicated frequently with me and seemed to find things went smooth,
for the most part. He has definately complimented the new Navmesh pathing
in place. Thanks again KLS (and the Emu dev community) for that!

But anyways, the following pretty much summarizes the server intentions,
(in beta) after June 29th. It is far from "era" perfect, but will keep
moving forward, removing out of era items and loot. There is an in-game
reward system to encourage players in reporting anything they run into.
Obviously, there is no priority for items with a required level of 71+
that can't be used anyways. Please visit the server forums for player
support questions.
  • Maximum Level 70 with 2-box per IP limit.
  • Server is permanently Locked at Omens of War Expansion
  • RoF2 Client is recommended, but UF+ is supported.
  • Spell & client files ARE NEEDED. See web forum site.
  • NO MQ or 3rd party hacks, they are NOT welcome.
  • OOC chat is not available until level 5.
  • Many out of era features (like OOC regen) are disabled.
  • Return Home button is enabled for practical reasons.
  • No Mercs, No Bots, No Scribers or Skill-ups.
  • No starter gear vendors or custom porters available.
  • Corpse summoner, Buff bot & General Supplies in PoK.
  • There is NO official support for solo/boxing players.
  • Content is built for a full,(solid) group up to end-game.
  • Minimum raid requirements have been reduced to 6 players.
  • Locked door access has been simplified with a "Master Key" system.
  • Many high end raid scripts altered for group-doable purposes.
  • Zone flags & levels are still needed. Some lockout timers reduced.
  • Scripts with banishment (like Naggy) are still in place.
A few extra server rules to take note of :
  1. Server owner is a part time a-hole behind his smile.
  2. This is not a solo server or a fast food drive-thru.
  3. Server Name will never change to Project "DoN".
  4. A disagreement is an individual opinion, not feedback.
  5. In case of conflicting interest, see rule #1. <wink>

Forgot to add something to all that. I don't mind players parking /afk, but after the
29th it would be more wise to do it in safe zones (like PoK, Nexus, Baz, etc). Not simply
to keep your toon safe from mobs, but I will be randomly checking up on toons who are
afk or idle in kill zones, just to make sure they are behaving themselves. :P
There is also a "Feedback and Input" section on the server forums for players to input
their opinions for some "reasonable" topics, such as boxing limit, etc.
I am willing to lend an ear, without getting off track or those who want to "solo all the
way to OOM". Trolls will only get beat up by a gang of dwarfs on steroids. :)

GRUMPY 06-16-2018 08:33 PM

IMPORTANT - Update
Late tonight, (June 17, 2AM CST), after a server restart, boxing will be
increased to 6 (per IP) with VERY limited use of MQ, strictly monitored.
If it gets to be a problem, decisions will be made.

http://projectomens.boards.net/

GRUMPY 06-20-2018 03:48 PM

Just an updated ruleset for the server, since the previous one posted. It's still low population
but it's slowly gathering new casual players. I've been busy this week with medical appts,
(almost done for another year), but I try to get in-game as much as possible and socialize.
  • Max Level 70, Maximum 6 Boxes per IP. No Mercs, No Bots.
  • MQ use is allowed, but LIMITED (NO WARPING, ZONE Hacks or AFK Killing)
  • There is NO scribers or skillups and NO starting gear vendors.
  • OOC Chat is not available until level 5
  • MOST of what did not exist when OoW was released in 2004, will not exist here.
  • Out of era removal process is ongoing.(items, loot, etc.)
  • If you have an out of era item, it will poof when discovered & removed from database.
  • There is a few convenience NPC's by main bank with minor buffs, etc.
  • There is a "Master Door Key" on the PoK vendor. This will ONLY unlock rogue-pickable doors.
  • All Zone Flags and Level Requirements are still in place.
  • Aside from a ride back to Tutorial, there are NO custom porters.
  • Boat gnomes are on the docks, and Nexus scions will help you.
  • Any Raid Bosses that were not doable by a group are one-groupable (w/ difficulty)
  • One full solid group of 6 toons with good gear and AA's can do high-end
  • Some scripts have been altered for this. Death Touch damage is back to (original) 10K
  • June 29th, it will be in full beta, but there will never be a character wipe.
  • Support forums can be found HERE
NOTE: JUNE 29th Beta start will also include a weekend of special things happening. :)
