Port Forwarding a VM?

Heyas, networkingilliterate123 here,

Long story short, I'm pretty linux illiterate, I have the eq server from akkas install up and running on a virtualbox linux and but I cannot connect to it.

Have a debian version of linux, I opened the ports via linux side but still cant seem to connect. I have also given myself sudo access etc but one other thing that I cant figure out is for some reason I dont have permission to change the eqconfig.json or those type of files.

I have had numerous windows servers but never linux, and even on windows port forwarding was always my worst enemy.

Any help would be awesome, at this point I'd literally pay someone to get this running lol.

You can set the VirtualBox network adapter to bridge mode instead of NAT. The only other thing I can think of is to google port forwarding for VirtualBox, which I've done once via Linux CLI but can't remember how.
