Ultimate EQ has been a blast for me for the last few months. There is only a 2 box limit and you can solo your way quite far. (though not as a cleric or something silly) I didn't make my 2nd box until quite far into the custom content. After the first few zones of custom content, you will need to group. Most everything can be done by two people (4 chars total). At an absolute stretch, you would need 3 people / 6 chars. Nothing needs more than that.
You will find that some leaps in Tier difficulty are rougher than others. However, once you do some good old fashioned EQ grinding for gear and AA it becomes significantly easier. Ultimate Guk's and Sebilis have some clickies that make gameplay and quality of life significantly better. Ie: Feign Death, Fading Memories, Vinelash (root), etc.
There are also quite a lot of powerful end-game buffs that people throw out as MGB in the hub on occasion. This will make a lot of the early content easy / trivial.
Overall, it is a good pick for someone who likes to play at their own pace.
