Default Question about EQEMU

I have noticed recently that if you are not on an account that has Admin Privledges under Windows XP that you get 1017 with EQEmu. However if you run EQLive it works without. Any idea what causes this, or is there an easy way around it? Other people use this computer and I would prefer to fix it without giving everyone admin access to my box. I know the version of EQ I have on here is compatible with EQEMU because it runs off an admin account fine with no 1017 error. Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated.

Some of the settings files and userdata need to be writable by anyone who runs the game. Check your permissions within that folder.

yes, the 6.2-4 client does not require admin to run properly. All of the clients previously did however.. quite annoying.

As ranger mentioned, make sure you change the ACLs on the EQ dir to allow anybody to write to it, that should be all that is needed for these newer clients.

/me starts to spread a rumor that maybe the change was a necessity: possibly after the rootkit scandal, a multitude of players became unwilling to run EQ with admin privileges anymore.

/me realizes that the rootkit fiasco happened after 9/13. Damn, no juicy rumor :(

/me thinks that nevertheless, it might be a good idea going forward to run EQ with non-admin privileges

I'll hold you up there and just say that the ACL's should not to be changed if you don't know what you're doing. It is possible to lock yourself out of the folders you're changing the ACL's on, and it's possible to get your system all screwy if you go changing ACL's on certain files.

If you're not familiar with the Windows permission system, then you need to enlist the help of somebody who is, let them know what your desired result is, and let THEM make those changes.

Thanks guys for the answers to my questions. I got EQ workin for other users And Turoen it's really not too hard, you could probably look around on Google and learn everything you want to know about changing permissions. It's not very complicated at all, but if you have never messed with them before and think you may mess something up, you may want to get help from a friend. Cause you can definately screw things up for yourself if you check the wrong boxes.
