Default Server specs

Hey all, I was thinking about the possibility of trying to start my own server but I really don't want to invest much money in case I quickly realize it's not for me.

Question is, what kind of system requirements are necessary for a windows based eq emu server? I would like to make it available for others to log in, but let's not kid anyone, I doubt anyone would log in, maybe a couple here and there. So the ability to host a handful of clients at the most.

Not that anyone cares, but I really don't have much disposable income and am working 2 jobs, which is kind of the reason for wanting to make my own server in the first place, that I can tweak to make it friendly for limited and sporadic play times.

Thanks for the help!

Probably anything really. Could get an older computer from thrift store or craigslist. Doesn't need video card if not running a client from it. From my own observations I would say, 4gb of ram enough, and a dual core cpu, though could do less possibly if your the only one logging in. I'm currently just using a little microboard pc, about the size of a router with duck tape holding it together :P, has dual core and 4gb ram. But if you wanted several people logging in then better cpu and more ram. But even then, an old pc would work. But for something more long term with lots of players (example - like grand creation or p99), youll need to invest in a proper setup or dedicated server with intent to keep it up.

So basically to start with, anything, could even use a netbook as a server, anything that would run windows 7 at least.

Guys thanks for the responses, that is good news. I've seen some sub-$100 refurbished computers that are probably 10 year old technology, but dual core with 2-4 gb ram which would be perfect for a starter. Definitely I think it would be fun to move to a dedicated server if time/finances/interest calls for it.

You only need a dedicated server if you have a playerbase.

And still, I ran Nagafen's lair on 2 Cores I7 4770/4gb ram through VMWare.

You also need to consider OS.

Compiling your own code requires a minimum of window 7 due to the required visual studio version.

I don't know if targeting older OS's will work or if older OS's allow the newer required runtimes.
