Default How to keep accounts/chars when updating DB

I'm not familiar with how to update the database, so I went ahead and did a complete reinstall except for the maps, using the install batch file. Not surprisingly, everything got overwritten, including a complete wipeout of my accounts and characters. Not a big deal since my characters are a dime a dozen (I set the experience multiplier to 25 lol) but how would I prevent this in the future? Is there an "update" script that only updates non-personalized stuff, or would I have to first back up accounts, all tables starting with "character," etc?

In your server folder is a file called eqemu_server.pl It's an update script, when you run it, will bring up a menu with various options. You can run that script from a cmd prompt by typing perl eqemu_server.pl or you can click into that server folder and double click on the file (in windows) and it should run it by default. But in all reality, it checks for updates automatically, each time you start your server.

Ah, had no idea about the automatic update check at the start. Guess I should watch the command prompt windows more closely instead of looking for snacks. Thanks as always!
