Good to hear that you worked through it.
On the update/backup, noudess, I think the script was just performing actions based on no database presence.
All of the triggers (and I mean ALL) would be hit if their comparison criteria were met or a false positive were returned.
Checking for a false/null criterion return to imply that an update has been applied probably lead to all of the update calls since an error is not considered false/null.
