If you can, try and find Ministy's 2nd album/cd called Twitch or do a kazaa lite search for anything off that. Your jaw will probably drop. No guitars, all electronic drum machine and all ;) Allen looked a l lot different back then as well. Looked more like a streeter/raver than anything. No wigs or cowboy hats back then..lol I'm actually getting a giggle thinking about what he looked like ;) I'd say Ministry now is probably closer to metal than tech since they actually use real musicians. Before it was just Allen and banks upon banks of synths, midi switches and drum machines as well as vocorder. He's actually rather multifaceted when it comes to bands. He's been in 10,000 homo DJ's and Revolting Cocks as well.
Here's a good site for discography and a basic write up on what he's done over the years and what 'genres' he's been affiliated with. Most of it's in spanish, but the recording dates are clear enough and there is a short blurb in english as well :) Back when I was a teenager (as stated above) the original 'goth' movement was just starting to die out. As you said before it resurfaced in the mid 80's but with a far more 'tech' feel to it rather than the dark edge bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy and Alien Sex fiend put out. Not sure if you remember a rock band from teh 80's called The Cult, but they as well started out in the early 70's as a goth band called Southern Death Cult. |
The Cult was great.. Had no idea they had an earlier incarnation... My wife is still in love with Ian Astbury....
|
I still have all their LP's (yes kids, there were things before CD's ;)) including Southern Death Cult and there was a limited edition Video that you could order when you bought the 'Love: LP that's collecting dust in a box with all my other 'collectible' import LP's ;)
Damn do I feel old now..lmao |
Yep... We've both dated ourselves....

I grew up to some of the heavyweights of metal, and loved all of them. Back when Metallica was classified as speed metal, not 'sell out crap metal' (but I DO like SOME of thier newer stuff, just the old stuff ALL was good). Dio, Dokken, Ratt, and yes, quiet riot was good still. Carmine apiece, Rudy Sarzo, and Tony Banoli were titans of rock (hell two out of the 3 played with ozzy at one point or another). It was Kevin Dubrow (sp) that f$cked it up for QR.... But I digress. I am a huge fan of music in general. My grandmother would not let me listen to any music besides Country when I was very young, becuase of the nastiness of the rock music. Ironic though, because if you had ever heard any country back then you would know that it was as dirty or more dirty than rock... C'mon, Conway Twitty sang "Lay me down"....... Anyhow, I Like everything from good orchestra (as trump pointed out, not nessecarily classical), to jazz, to rap (yes I like the way SOME rap is put together, as a song on the whole), and country (not much of that do I like though). I epecially like live music ... I just appreciate the talent it takes to be able to come together and play instruments in such a manner as to entertain an audience. That to me is good music.

QR... I saw them about a year ago.. Kevin Debrow is back with them, so its all the original guys from 'Metal Health'... I always thought Carlos Cavazo was a HIGHLY underrated guitar player, he was incredible..
Dokken, another great band. George Lynch had one of the most unique styles in rock music at the time.. His solos still send shivers up my spine (Dream Warriors, incredible solo, if I play guitar for another 20 years I still wont be able to comp that solo) I agree, I respect the talent regardless of the genre.. I was trying to learn Chet Aktins 'Yakety Sax' last night (amazing song!). Bluegrass has some awe-inspiring musicians also. |
My favourites are "Rammstein" and sometimes (really mood dependant) "Deine Lakaien" ("The game" is a great song).
Nothing like programming while listening to really loud music by Rammstein. :) Classic music is great also and most of the 80s stuff. |
