I have found that the version of perl you need is the same as the version that the binaries were compiled with. I always have to recompile, the precompiled binaries always want perl 5.8. My server is setup with perl 5.10. It took me a while to get my server up and running and it was on 5.10 so I haven't bother to try to redo it. I have the ability to recompile and that always works for me.
