Isnt EQEmu freeware?
If EQEmu is freeware that ebay dude has just commited a serious crime.. internet fraud... if it is freeware.. find out his info (maybe offer him 50 bucks but say you want his info first) and then report him to www.ifccfbi.gov which is the FBI's internet complaint center,I know the FBI wont get involved but they will report it to local police and such...
|
He needs to:
1) Give credit to he who made it (Not him) (That will kill his auction idea, though. LoL) 2) Tell the truth in the auction!! 3) Not Copy+Paste *your* screenshots off of your site. What he is doing for $75 or $150 (Probaly, $0.00) is just ridiculous. |
CHECK the lisense of EQEMU. ITS GPL. THIS MEANS HES allowed to sell it. It may not be pretty, but its legal. IF YOU don't believe me, GO READ THE GPL PUBLIC LISENSE AT http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html
|
Hes allowed to sell it but ebay will ban him because its a type of eq exploit, he wont be sellin dat on ebay! lol... Thank god.. verant did something good for once...
|
I personally don't see what the GPL license has to do with any of this, he wasnt redistributing the code, modifying it, or copying it. He was selling information about this site, on fraudulent pretenses, and asking a ridiciulous sum for it on top of that.
Regardless of whether EQEMU is GPL or not, this is a completely seperate issue. He was posting screenshots from this website, with no type of express permission, and as such, violated both Ebays advertising policy and Verant's ebay internet policy. THAT is in no way protected by the GPL. It's Internet fraud, plain and simple. You keep dragging it up, but regardless of the licensing of the product, we're not talking about redistribution of the code here. |
how do you figure that selling a url is illegal? Also, the picture. Do we KNOW if he just LINKED to us or if he COPIED the picture...... anyone got a cache of site? If he copied the picutre he is guilty of copyright violations, but copyright violation =! fraud. Especially when he SAID he was selling url (why he didn't just sell the software in the first place i dont know)
|
Thats how these ebay bozo's THINK there getting away with it. thay make some stupid disclaimer saying "i'm only selling MY time that took to get this info/char/account/ect". it wouldnt hold up in court though.
|
Lets think of it TWO ways.
1) He linked the image. 2) He hosted the image. 1 - He did not give credit to the copyright owner on the image. 2 - He did not have permission to host the image from EQEMU. Either way you put it, host or link, he broke da law of da land. |
and yet my question was still not answered, is EQEmu freeware like EQW???
|
Yes its freeware, im not selling it, am I? :)
|
no. EQEMU is GPL. which is a TYPE of freeware that can be shareware, or comercial, as long as certain conditions are met
|
Yoda, did you come back to the boards for any reason? Last I remember, you took off in a huff because someone gave you the 'banned' avatar.
Are you here to help the project, or to just argue about the way things are being done now? I smell sour grapes.. :-( I'm personally betting Yoda would like nothing better than to see the dev team get pissed off , close the source, and dump the whole project. |
Lets make sure that dosent happen...

I don't know what actually started this thread, although I also read some comments that may be misconceptions. Once misconception is that you need pemission to link to a site or that all graphics are automaticallly covered under the IP (intellectual property laws). There are exceptions to this, for example thumbnails. But this is not an IP (intellectual property) thread so I will stop except to mention that it sounds like what someone was doing on Ebay was of little concern to the Eqemu community except to to sigh. But be prepared. One day you may see an Eqemu book complete with CD media and there is nothing you can do about it. All I am suggesting that as long as the product is under GPL license then all the sections of the GPL must be honored. Otherwise what is the point. |
