Guys, he's onto the scam (shhhhhhh). Err... what scam?

Actually, I get paid $14/hr to sit on my ass and make sure that computer/phone/voicemail/network systems stay up, and repair them when they go down. From time to time, I remove garbage, and change the clocks when the daylight savings kicks in. I usually try to do homework, but of late, I just negotiated a 100% grade in my math class if I tutor the students who need help and grade homework so the teacher doesn't have to. He uses my tests as grading keys anyway :P I don't have to take tests or quizzes, or do homework. I'm only taking 2 classes this quarter.

I'm responsible for phones, voicemail, every computer in the building, 20 ATM machines across the U.S., and vaccuuming, bathroom maintenance, and trash. From time to time, I'm told to get off my lazy ass and build ATM/assorted kiosk machines in our shop. I don't like to vaccuum. When the shit hits the fan, I work 80 hour weeks and get paid for 34. When the shit is still in the toilet, I work 34 hours (no... I come in 20 minutes late, and leave 30 minutes early) and get paid 34 hours.

Do you know how little work is involved in much of IT? It's basically the skill of knowing lots of stuff and applying logic sometimes. I get outsourced at a whopping $150/hr sometimes, but usually I'm staring at a website, counting the ticks of the clock until the end of the day. The only reason I still work here with the little amount that I do is that I'm very cheap for what they're getting. I replaced a woman who worked only on computer networks and phones who got 2X what I did, and she outsourced the phone stuff at $187/hr and told the company to pay the bill.

The company charges our customer $50k for me, and I'm not always here. Everything else I do as far as labor besides sitting with 2 phones strapped to me is gravy as far as they're concerned. I'm young, unmarried, so benefits for me are pretty damn cheap.

So Kyle, in response to your question, yes. Yes, we have jobs. If you can find a job this cool, you'll probably spend all day on worthless (as far as global progress is concerned) bullshit only to find meaning in the wasted hours of your life...

Windcatcher 11-18-2003 08:42 AM

I feel better, too. I thought I was the old man at 33...

Yes, I have a job (a good one) 8)

a_Guest03 11-20-2003 08:57 AM

I take it this is the USA? I don't know where else the drinking limit is 21... Aside from in International Airspace. They tried to take my beer from me as we departed Berlin when I was 16.

Actualy in the state of Texas there is no drinking age in 2 situations. First if the under age persons parents take them out drinking, Second is if the under age persons spouse takes them out drinking.

It was interesting when I was stationed in SanAntonio, there was a 22 year old guy with a 17 year old wife and we all use to go out drinking.

Also Fort Bliss Texas has a leagle drinking age of 18 as long as you dont leave the post. The reason we were given is that there so close to Mexico that its safer to let them drink on post then to have them go to Mexico to drink.
