Next Release

We are working (well most of us) as fast as we can on getting the emu working with current client again. This will be a total wipe of characters upgrade, not something we could stop.

Well, the devs have come to a conclusion for the next release of the EMu, we will be redoing the login server accounts again. This is a prime time to make everyone have no duplicate accounts (again, I know).

The new system will be totally different than what you know now. You HAVE to have a valid, non hotmail/excite/yahoo email address (sorry, if you DONT have a normal account, how are you on the net? Does your ISP really suck that much?). You will go to apply for a cdkey from our signup page, it will email it to your email address. Once you have this, you will be able to use the NEW ACCOUNT button in the client and use your account instantly. That is streamlined from the way the system is now. Questions or comments on it? Please post replies to this thread.

And we want to stress completly, that your e-mail addresses will NOT be given out or leaked in any way. dont worry about your ISP/e-mail providor finding out you are using EQEmu :)

Ariak 05-12-2002 07:26 AM

Can the devs create an account if we have a cable E-Mail? My Cable E-Mail has 1500 messages in it. I get on average 100 spam a day. I gave up on it. I use my Hotmail because it allows insta blocking.

Shawn319 05-12-2002 07:30 AM

why would a dev create it if you have an e-mail? you will have to validate it yourself from your computer (i think its an IP thing).

Draelin 05-12-2002 07:43 AM

IP Based

Is this IP-based or just email based? I ask this because my sister plays too and she's on the same LAN but with a different email address :)

DeletedUser 05-12-2002 12:24 PM

This fixes the AOL/Cable people behind proxies. Even if you get 100 spams a day (I do too, on my hotmail account), you can still find this and use it for 1 moment to setup your account. Devs have no way to override this, cause, that would defeat the purpose of having these checks.

Fadaar 05-12-2002 12:40 PM

Hogie I've been using Excite as my only email for the last year and a half.... I'm sure I could use my ISP email, but it's registered to my dad's office (ie, NOT mine). So, I don't know how well that would go over. Is there any way we could get authorization over IRC, AIM, ICQ, etc.?

Shawn319 05-12-2002 12:49 PM

frankly i dont think anyone wants to take the time hand authorizing everyone ( *IF* it could be done ).

I'm sure there is at least one other free e-mail providor hogie hasnt thought of :) best bet is to try to find one of them.

stormgod 05-12-2002 01:06 PM

all peeps at univertsity and the like ( ie having the T3 of their university or something like that ) and I know some of them using the emu , dont have a ISP adress , will we be able to create an account for them ?

t3mp14rX 05-12-2002 01:24 PM

Total BS

The IP Address is: 65.31.155.155. The host name is: mke-65-31-155-155.wi.rr.com. Please click here to return to the thread.

LOL okay that made my day, that was some funny "sh!t" to read =)

If you want another email that probably isn't 'blocked' would be barrysworld.com =) it is usually for online Clan games but I dont play any of the games they discuss and I have an account (free POP3).

TDD 05-12-2002 02:06 PM

You could also try iclinux.com

DeletedUser 05-12-2002 02:16 PM

Were in your grasp? Uh... last I checked there IS a downloadable login server...

TDD 05-12-2002 02:34 PM

Yep, you guys are turning into Verant. Its only free, we can create and GM our own server, we don't have to camp items for days on end, or need to be in an uber guild to do everything, or have to pay 50 bucks a month just to see giant level 3 orcs attack Freeport. But besides that, you guys ARE Verant.

/sarcasm off

Lyenu X`Arie 05-12-2002 06:15 PM

Go to www.hehe.com to get email address. It's got about 130 different domains for emails it seems like =P. But all emails are monitored by our computer, and if an IP registers two different accounts with the same email it'll ban that IP from the login server, so I wouldn't try to make more than 1 =) Anyways! =D Incase you haven't heard, publiclogin will be broken with the nextpatch and it has been discontinued.

Arcalyn 05-12-2002 06:23 PM

WTF is going on?

I don't get the current debate in here.

1. They're coding the emu for themselves not you all....they were simply nice enough to let others goof with it.

2. They're setting things up in such a way so they can learn. Which is the Main reason for doing an Emu. Knowledge = Value

3. Relax, enjoy what works while it does.

4. State your opinions but don't flame/complain.

5. Encourage them to keep it open to public.

6. When they demand payment, then flame! Else help out were you can & when.

Disclaimer.....I in no way represent the EQemu staff's opinions!
Nor do I represent the opinions of myself. The facts stated above aren't facts but simply graphical anomalies caused by your crappy video card working in conjunction with Microsoft's Directx over-coded display drivers. All content copywrite 2002 and may not be displayed in any monitor other than mine. In order to view this material please send $49.95 by Check or Money Order to Me. Sorry no refunds. Nightfall 05-12-2002 07:58 PM

Lol

Well, I for one agree with you. The Emu is great... if they need some way of verifying that you are only making one account, then so be it. If people didn't try to break the loose rules that were set up, stricter ones wouldn't be needed. Ah well... keep up the good work, looking forward to the next release! ^_^

Mauritius 05-12-2002 09:38 PM

alright, I agree with Arcalyn and Nightfall,
as long I can set up EQ to be played on my LAN

stormgod 05-12-2002 11:19 PM

so most freemails will be blocked but not all , right ? say I'm at university on a T3 without a pop3 account I can still use a iclinux or something like that ?

As long as hogie doesnt find out what free e-mail providor you are using then you are fine... but there goes iclinux :)

EQfan2002 05-13-2002 12:49 AM

no complaining

im not quite sure if those first couple of post were complaints or not but these guys at Eqemu are great. Finally, an EQ for people with LIVES. no sitting and camping mobs, no hours trying to gain lvls, and totally free (yeah cause verant just bumped the monthly price to 13$) I cant wait for the emu to come out! I have a question for the dev.: will the installment and setup for the new emu be easy? i had some difficultly with the last one, no prob. though :p keep up the good work.

EQfan2002

I doubt the install for any of the versions are going to get any easier... They are dirt simple to begin with if you ask me.. It takes me less than 5 minutes to set up a server from scratch..

You have to understand something, this is a server project, not a nice pretty point and click and it magically works tool. To be a server admin, I think you have to accept the fact that you are going to have to learn new technologies, and grit your teeth and just learn it, instead of asking for everyone to simplifiy it.

To run your own server correctly, you need to understand a few things at a minimum.

TCP Ports, IP theory
Mysql use (lots of good tutorials on this on the web)
SQL (ditto, good stuff on the web)
How to navigate in commandline mode (DOS)

Then, additionally, to be a worldbuilder you need to understand the actual database content formats (spawngroups, quest formats, etc)

Relying on tools is only going to get you so far.. Running a server is not for the faint of heart.. If you are one of those 'Ima newb, can someone explain this plllllzzzzzzzz' kinda folks, my suggestion would be that you stick to playing on an emulated server rather than running your own.

This is just my 2 cents worth..

Sorry, wasnt meant to be a rant. I've found it funny though that people that can't even use file explorer properly have asked me about how to set up a server. If you dont have the necessary
background, explaining how to use mysql is going to be a real nightmare!

Also, this post is not directed at anyone in particular, so don't think I'm flaming an indivudual..

Teppen 05-13-2002 02:19 AM

jus curious

actually my isp does suck so much ass that they dont provide email accounts, ($9 mth), i get all notifications by snail mail. I have 2 emails set-up on the net, one on hotmail, which i know you say isnt good at this point.. and the other is on www.collegeclub.com . would collegeclub be blocked also? Sorry jus been using the emu since its birth, in a way and would hate to have to cancel using it now. Really need feedback on this.

Trumpcard 05-13-2002 02:35 AM

Heres a hint...

Quick mentioning free email services..

Hogie will be making a list, and checking it twice..

Just try it... If it works, great, if not, move on to another..

EQfan2002 05-13-2002 03:33 AM

trumpcard

im not setting up my own server, im just asking about the new emu version setup.

EQfan2002 05-13-2002 10:26 AM

cdkey

about the cdkey, in their a link where we can apply now or is it being worked on?

Lyenu X`Arie 05-13-2002 07:39 PM

Don't quote me on any of this but, in time I plan to make a GUI interface so that controling and running the accual EmuServer stuff is easy (and takes up less on the taskbar). But you'll still need to know MySQL and TCP Port Routing (if that needs to be done). Other than that it'll be nice and easy to set up! I might even make a setupwizard if I find the time for it, but remember this project is a LONG WAYS down the road =).

DeletedUser 05-13-2002 10:56 PM

What I am aiming for is duplicate accounts. Nobody needs 2 - 5 accounts like some do now. Why? Because you lost your password? Why didn't you ask for help? Did it not auth right? Why didn't you ask for help?

IMHO, Hotmail, Yahoo & Excite are the sewers of the internet. That is where spammers send out their spam to HONEST people. It is also where the runners of the service sell their user lists to spammers.. Im not saying you guys are spammers or anything, but, I am honestly thinking about blocking all yahoo/excite/hotmail off my personal mail server. It is like blacklisting kalama.com because of how 1 trouble maker wont leave the project alone. The internet sucks.

As for email addresses, you can use sourceforge email addresses. When you sign up for an account at www.sf.net, it will forward username@users.sourceforge.net to your email address. just a little hint.

EQfan2002 05-14-2002 07:43 AM

Hogie, plz help.

i have two screen names, mainly cause my brother refuses to use the same name, will people with accounts already be able to apply for the cd keys? is there a place to apply now or is it in the making?

yours,
EQfan

Nsane 05-15-2002 09:53 AM

Minilogin?

Will minilogin still work?

Aramus 05-15-2002 02:04 PM

It should, seeing as you don't connect to any servers.

Ronko 05-18-2002 02:54 PM

When's the ETA on the new EMEMU?
was just wonderin cause i screwed up by downloading the patch for the 8th :( hey does anyone know how to undo the patch thing? lol >for real  <

DeletedUser 05-18-2002 03:16 PM

Read the rules Ronko

sady 05-20-2002 07:38 AM

why?

What is the intent of all this checking anyway?
i dont realy understand why we need to use our email from an isp, if it has to do with domain every one on bellsouth.net is on the same domain and we all have a 65.x.x.x i forgot but its like that, except the last 2 or 3 numbers are diffrent every time i log on to the internet. any way my point is that i dont understand.
