Abyss\Zeb DB

I really hope someone will take this db and do something with it. It deserves a good home. Here is a link to download the db and quest pack. This is my modified version. Please don't ask me how to set it up. There is plenty of information here.

There are some changes to the accounts that I forgot to change back before I compiled the sql. But they are easy to fix. Accounts are set to 2 by default and most zones require a 2 to enter. No new accounts can be created. So just change the accounts and zones back to a 0 status.

Also magic resistance has been lowered across the board and and kunark\rss raid mobs have been nerfed a bit. Prismatic Dye works. It didn't before. I don't remember everything I changed. I never kept a log (yikes). But there really wasn't much. I did some work with augments. I was able to combine them but it never worked correctly. Hope someone has better luck.

I would love to archive that db, but I won't let IGN install their crap on my system ;) Any chance of a different host?

Amra 08-07-2007 10:55 AM

If someone wants to host the file I will send it to them via msn or ftp. I am tbones73@hotmail.com

Would you be willing to host the server, john? haha

John Adams 08-07-2007 11:17 AM

Email sent. ;)

gernblan 08-07-2007 04:51 PM

I'm happy to host the file.

This thread is epic for all the Zeb players.

An epic thread is not complete without an epic picture.

Kick ass. :)

I am currently hosting the Abyss server, but not so officially. I have my own server to run, but mine is just a playground. I felt bad for the Abyss players, so I thought I would evaluate how busy it is to see if it's worth keeping up.

The reason I say "not so officially" is because I have other plans for my server... and hopefully, Abyss/Zeb can find a permanent home soon. Meanwhile, the players should be able to log in and enjoy.

And please, if anyone else wants to step up and take this server, say the word. I have no time in my day to admin/GM, so I am just hosting it.

Amra 08-08-2007 06:28 AM

Gernblan, I will be out of town until the 14th. Maybe John could give you a copy.

Thanks for putting it up, John.

John Adams 08-08-2007 06:58 AM

Sure, I'll mirror it from my site for a while. Prolly take the link down after a month or so.

At the request of the Abyss/Zeb community looking for their server, I have tried to bump the name a little higher in the roster so players know it's running again. I'm not a fan of doing this, but who am I to argue with the players? :)

I'm fixing a few things, like zone-in points and black skies... and thinking about opening up some of those locked zones. But after looking at places like FG, I am confused if the mobs are tuned lower intentionally, or severely out of balance? Shrooms with 1062 HPs and level 25? seems odd for Fungus Grove.

That's the problem with taking over a custom DB - you don't know what the hell the original intentions were, and I'm afraid to "fix" anything or it might upset the players.

John Adams 09-10-2007 07:41 AM

Sorry to report, my one month "evaluation" of this database has concluded, and it is completely not the server format I choose to run. I have announced to the player base that I will be shutting down The Abyss on my servers soon - but when, really depends on if someone is willing to pick it up and run it themselves (download from the above links). If no one is interested, it will go down this next weekend (Sep 14, 2007). If someone wants to try and set it up, we can coordinate taking mine down and yours up so players do not miss a beat.

I recommend using the above database (as opposed to the current copy) because we made many changes in an effort to add new content, and received no positive responses.

Anyway, best wishes to those players who are once again losing their home due to circumstances beyond my tolerance.

gernblan 09-11-2007 04:23 PM

John, when you take it down, let me know so I can get a copy of your "final" snapshot. I'll take a good look at it and decide to host it or not.

Thanks.

It's down. And I'm not going to put out our changes, because as I might have mentioned, they were not well received. As to not invite a flamefest, that's all I'm going to say. Your best bet if interested is to take the db from Amra from above (or my mirrored link) and check it out.

It really is a great concept db. Loved many of the ideas. It was just too dumbed down for my taste as an admin.

You need to be more specific. What problem are you having?

If you want a small, effective editor, try conTEXT. It's FREE (for now), pretty cool and supports all sorts of code. I'm not a programmer but I do use it for editing html. I also replaced Notepad with it.

Very nice little editor for windows - glad you posted the link, thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it's Windows program. Thanks for pointing that out, Angelox. :)

If you're sourcing in the original db from Amra (linked above), you should have no problems with missing tables - since it creates them for you.

A great tool to use is SQLYog. Just use the Restore from SQL Dump option and you're in business. Follow Amra's original post to tweak what is needed to allow new players, should you choose to run it publicly.

GeorgeS 10-12-2007 01:32 PM

Context editor is an excellent tool, and also you will need WinHex, another neat tool for browsing binary data. Now if only Context dealt with binary data...

If you do decide to run it publicly you should know there isn't a good balance on the server. I would wipe the character/account table completely, review Loot drops, nerf the buff bot and revamp some higher level items. It's a huge project that I didn't want to invest in. But the content is amazing. With a lot of work it could be an awesome db. Just my opinion.

But a lot of people liked it the way it was. And that's cool with me :)

I have the original DB without my modifications if you would like that. I will see if I can get a host somewhere.

oh and don't forget to change access levels (as john pointed out) on the accounts and zones if you choose not to wipe the player-base. It will prevent new accounts from being able to zone into the server. Other than that good luck.

manc2 01-08-2008 02:16 AM

so ...

no one want to host this once-popular custom database?

TheLieka 01-10-2008 05:11 PM

I'd be happy to host it, but I don't have the time to actually work on it. So it would need a dev staff.

Dax

manc2 01-10-2008 11:04 PM

the database is well developed so i think further development would be uneccessary

John Adams 01-11-2008 07:23 AM

I felt nostalgic, put the Abyss back online one day for about 35 minutes. Me and my lead GM walked around, looked at each other, and said "f**k this" and took it down again.

Way to unbalanced, way to "simple", hacks galore, many quests and terrain maps broken, utilizes only about 1/4th the entire world in content, and without a constant GM/Dev presence, people simply quit. Amra's advice is best; wipe everything and start clean. Or better yet, let the classic memory stay a memory and lead players to new, fresh servers.

It was popular while it was up. So if that's your thing, give it a whirl. Just don't ever log yourself in ;) You might get inspired to "fix" something.

Sanity 01-11-2008 05:06 PM

I wish I had the time/skill to host it for others. As it is, I have it set up just so I can walk around and remember the "good old days". I never played the Abyss version but the Zeb version in its day was loved and played by many as is. Sure its wildly broken in John's eyes, and I respect his opinion. But many found it suited their tastes perfectly and we had great fun in that world.

John Adams 01-26-2008 05:37 AM

Heya Sanity :)

Naw, what I mean by "broken" is the balance was so off, there was no possibility to expand it. During my time testing Abyss, I had so many petitions, PMs and tells asking me if there would be more content (which initially I refused to attempt). And as you know, trying to change existing content just freaked people out... there was nowhere to go, the world was "as-is". Yes, it was fun, but there were also a ton of exploits and broken quests, and even zones where you could kill mobs all day without them attacking you.

I've toyed with putting it back online, but honestly I think I'd rather create something new and let the old memories be good ones.
(actually, if I had the ability to host Abyss -and- my own dev server, I'd run them both... ;) )

bouzi567 01-26-2008 01:34 PM

I was wondering is there any guide on how to get the zeb version going? like what to do with that file?any help would be great ty

Revilor 01-27-2008 04:25 PM

Yes it was a good server while it lasted, but it is time to let it be a memory.

trevius 01-27-2008 05:16 PM

Heya Rev :P

LOL, actually Zeb is back up right now :P Jibba brought it up temporarily to see if there was still any interest left in the server. As it is now, all character that were there when his server went down are all still there. Haven't spoken to Jibba since he brought the server back up, but the MoTD currently says he is leaving it up until Feb something to see if it gets interest back.

I am sure if he was planning to keep it up for good, it would take no time at all to get players there again. My guess is that not many want to play there right now, knowing an exact date that the server may go poof for good again.

As it has been said before, Zeb was one of the best Emu servers of all time. As far as what I have seen and read about, it would definitely be in the top 10. As far as any servers currently up and running, Zeb is probably in the top 3 IMO, at least for english speaking servers :P Obviously PEQ is in the top 3, and probably KMRA or the PVP server are in the current top as well.

And the way I read it, it looks like John only had the Abyss modified version of Zeb, not the original Zeb database. Zeb pre-abyss stuff was amazing. I didn't play on it when Abyss spliced their stuff in, but the original Zeb was far from "broke" hehe.

Don't get me wrong, there are some other great servers out there, but it is just my opinion that Zeb is a step above most.

Got my own server up now too btw. Anyone is welcome to check it out if you like. Gonna make an official post about it tomorrow, when it leaves the primary testing state.

Jibbatwinkers 01-29-2008 04:00 AM

I think Rev is the one who brought that server up just to see if there was any interest in playing on it. You should see old Zeb up and running by next week I'm rebuilding the server right now. After that I'll make an official announcement about it.

I hope there aren't 20 clones running around out there, Jibb is back man.

Revilor 01-29-2008 05:09 AM

Yea I brought it up for a while and got some responds to it. I think if Jibba does bring his server back up and does some work to it and tweak it a bit I bet it would be back on the top list again. Good Luck Jibba :)

Woot! Awesome, man!

And no, there aren't 20 clones. I haven't seen a single one since shortly after your server shut down last year.

GeorgeS has a ton of new updates to his tools, assuming you use those. They will definitely help make development even smoother and quicker for you if you get back into that stuff again. :)

I can't wait to hear the official word that it is up, hehe.

ivanho 01-31-2008 09:52 AM

I'll be back in too! We've already got many ideas about new content and changes. Here's to a long lasting Zeb!

John Adams 08-25-2011 11:32 PM

Sorry for the necro... didn't feel like starting a new thread.

In 2007, when Amra took down the Abyss, I offered to run it for the players. My mistake back then was attempting to add content to the database... in doing so, pissed off many of the players which in turned, pissed me off when they stopped playing, and I took the server down. Immediately after that, I got absorbed into EQ2Emulator and have been solely working on that since.

Meanwhile, I'm clearing off some data on an old server and stumble across this database - the original one from Amra (Buju?). Realizing I now have the ability to run a 2nd EQEmulator, I present you with the 2007 version of The Abyss.

Note: There will be no changes made to this content, not even fixes. I have no time or interest to spend on an EQEmulator. This is provided as-is. The only thing I am attempting to do is bring the database up to current code specs, as long as the DB/code changes do not break the existing content. Meanwhile, it's running on EQEmu-0.7.0_1061 (yes, 2007 code ;)) Eh, seems to run!

This is available if there is any interest. If not, I could always run a VZTZ DB I also found.

As you were.
