Just updated today using Rev 471 and noticed that after a few seconds of play on a SoF client my characters run/walk animation dissapears. Actually all character animations dissappear. The character is just in a solid state and hovers around the screen. If you cast a spell it casts but does not do any animations. If you zone your animation will return but after a bit of time it will go back into the same state.
Basically unplayable. |
Odd, Derision fixed that issue a while back. I don't know if I would call lack of animations "unplayable" though lol.
Are you sure that you have moved the patch_SoF.conf from your /utils directory into your main server folder? Animations seem to work fine for me. I am not running 471 yet, but I am running R460 with all of the SoF changes up to R470 (holding off on using R461+). The animations were fixed by hard setting one of the stance field in the spawn struct. That hasn't changed, so this shouldn't really be an issue. Not sure what would cause it, but worth looking into I am sure. |
I would like to add that after a bit more testing I have found that once the "animation freeze" kicks in it is happening to all toons on the screen, PC or NPC. Some things look like they are going in slow motion others are just motionless.
|
Yes I have the patch_SoF.conf file in my directory. All worked fine before the update. I was around rev447ish before I updated.
Edit: -rw-r--r-- 1 eq eq 19866 May 5 15:35 patch_SoF.conf that is from an ls -l in my server directory. |
Odd, I just tested from my home computer and it does not have this issue. Only the remote machine I was working on earlier is having the animation problem.
Both pcs run gentoo linux with wine 1.1.12 and nvidia drivers. Maybe I have a corrupted file on the remote machine? I have one more laptop I can test to see. It has the same config gentoo/wine 1.1.12/nvidia/SoF |
Tested out fine on the other laptop. So this bug is isolated to the initial remote machine I tested on.
Some files must have gotten hosed up when I copied the client files to the pc over the network. It is the same client folder I use on all my pcs. Hmmmm, new thought. I have conky running on that pc and forgot to disable it. I will have to try that next time I am sitting at that machine. Sorry about the misunderstanding... |

Same errors
I have exactly the same errors in my world log but in my case, I can't get past the character selection screen.
In fact, when I get to the character selection screen, buttons don't work. I can click on them but nothing happens. There is a character names newbie jumping weirdly (looks like a glitch, not an actual jump). I'm kinda lost as to what files I need to update in the eqemu folder and in the sof folder. I have the lastest maps in the maps folder, I have the last quests form the svn too. I tried running it on a single core with runfirst too (and in compatibility mode and as an administrator). I should say that I'm running it on windows vista 64. I also tried connecting to a bunch of private servers and I have the same bug on each and every one of them. I can get to the character selection screen but I am stuck there. Any hint to what my problem could be? thanks for your help |
As I said, those particular "error" messages can be ignored. They aren't an error at all really, just a log of the packet that is coming in. Nothing to do with your issue.
Your issue sounds like a multi-core CPU issue. I don't really know much about Vista 64, but I think some people have been able to get it working for the emulator. If you are running an AMD processor, you might try downloading the AMD drivers to see if that helps. I think the FAQ in my sig has some suggestions about what to do with muliti-core issues and should have a link to find the AMD drivers if needed. If it is intel, then I don't really know. Also, you mention having an SoF folder. Are you trying to play with just an SoF installation? You haven't tried Titanium yet? If so, then the issue is very likely that the servers you have tried don't have SoF enabled on them yet. If you have access to the Public Login Server, try PEQ or Storm Haven and see if you can get logged in ok. Both of those servers run very recent updates from the SVN and both have SoF enabled on them. |
I run my server on Vista 64, with the exception of now that I switched it to Linux. I also run the client on Vista 64, and I've never had any issues. As long as you're up to date on all your stuff there shouldn't be any issues with vista. Just have to always deal with UAC, or turn it off.

I have those same problems when I try to connect to any server (I get stuck on character selection screen). I guess my problem is with vista 64 then. I tried runfirst to run eq on a single core but it didn't work at all.
Right now I'm trying to get my own server working. I am using R486 eqemu with all the lastest database and changes available on the svn. I tried titanium but it was even worst than secrets of faydwer. At least with sof I get to the character selection screen but I get stuck there :-). I dont have any problems with any game except eq. I have this line in my dbg.txt and I really dont know what it means [Thu May 14 21:41:04 2009]00073:Failed to open C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\EverQuest\GlobalDRK_chr.s3d. Is that file even supposed to exist? I didn't have it in my fresh sof install. thanks for your help |
You can ignore that line in your EQ debug file, that is normal to see and isn't an issue as far as I know.
It sounds like you are still having a multi core CPU issue. Are you using an Intel or an AMD processor? Intel's seem to work perfectly without needing any changes in most operating systems, but AMDs normally need drivers installed, at least in XP or so for them to work right. Though, Vista should have those working already as long as your updates are current. Probably the reason that SoF works better for you is because it has better multi-core support than Titanium does. Have you tried going through the options screen before the login screen again to make sure it saves your settings properly before playing? Once you edit those options, you have to exit EQ and restart it for the changes to take effect. Might be a good idea to restart your whole PC if you haven't tried that already. Oh, what version of DirectX are you running? I hear EQ doesn't like DX10 much. |
Hi Trevius,
ok when I thought I was stuck at the character screen, I really wasn't. I could get in my server but I had another problem. Listen to this, it is kinda weird. I thought I was stuck because buttons didn't work when I clicked on them. In fact they are working but I have to click repeatedly on any button for it to work. The animations of the character are too fast and my mouse clicks are too fast. I finally succeeded in creating a character (by drilling on the buttons) and got into the game. When I got in the game, I noticed that my character is running way, WAY too fast. So, everything is way too fast at the character selection screen and way too fast in game. My pc is very fast but I don't understand why eq is faster than it should be. I'm running the game on a single core with runfirst too. do you have any idea what I could do to make the game run at a normal speed? thanks for your help |
That is definitely a multi-core issue, considering the symptoms. Is this a PC that you built yourself, or one that was built by a manufacturer? And have you verified what version of DirectX you are running? You should be able to click your start button and click "Run..." and then type in dxdiag in the box and click ok and it will load DXDiag and show you your DirectX version.
I would try stopping the program that is forcing you to run on a single core, because it obviously isn't helping. Then, maybe try running in different compatibility modes to see if any help. Also, it is worth noting that I had built myself a PC about a year ago and got a CPU that was apparently not compatible with the motherboard I had bought to use with it (though the motherboard info showed that it should have been). I had very similar issues to the ones you are seeing and nothing I did could resolve it. Finally after I isolated that it had to be an issue with the hardware, I contacted the manufacturer of the motherboard to find that the CPU was recently added to the unsupported list for that motherboard. And, that was my problem the entire time (DAYS of troubleshooting wasted). Though, when I was having that particular problem, I noticed major performance issues in all games I tried to play, not just EQ. |
He has DX10 if he's running vista, comes stock.
|
yeah I have dx10. But I also have the directx 9.0C components. My pc doesn't have any trouble running directx 9.0c games.
I have had this pc for over a year now and the only game I had problems with is eq. I can play any other game fine. I know amd has a patch to solve that kind of problems but I didn't find anything for intel. Any other clue for me? thanks |
What videocard do you have?
|
it's a gtx280 from evga.
I tried using old drivers but this card being less than 1 years old, the drivers don't go back much. What to do now, I'm wondering :-) |
I'm currently using the WHQL 185.85 from NVIDIA, so I don't think a card issue. My friend is running the same card and he plays with me just fine.
Are you overclocking your system at all? |
Hi,
the problem was indeed my overclocking. I was at 2000 fsb (instead of 1333) so I got it down to about 1600 and it runs perfectly. Looks like Secrets of faydwer can't handle serious fsb overclocking :-) The game runs perfectly now, absolutely no problems. thanks |
Cool, glad you got it sorted. ;-)

Sorry to necropost.
KillEverything listed the exact problem that I am having with a fresh install of SoF client. I can get as far as creating a character and pressing the Enter World button. At that point, I sit for about a minute before receiving a Disconnected from server error. On my server, I can see where i connected and the world server is trying to zone me into my starting city (neriakc). At the point I get a client disconnected message on the server (not in active process - something like that). Any ideas? |
The client disconnect from the world process is normal. That is when the client is transferring to the zone process. Since it made it that far, you will have to check log files for the zone process to look for errors.
|
You can verify if it is your client or your server if you try using your SoF client on another public server that has SoF enabled such as Storm Haven or The Grand Creation. At least then you will be able to narrow the problem down to your server and not your client or visa versa.
|
OK, here is what I found in my client log...
Code:
[Wed Jun 10 22:43:08 2009]00192:Initializing character select UI. |
Yes, the server is disconnecting you before you load any of the zone stuff. Did you try another SoF enabled server to verify if it is your client or not? It helps to narrow the issues down before starting to do anything else for troubleshooting.
|
It looks like you're logging into your server with its external IP address. You must be logging in through the public login server, then.
Are you sure you've forwarded ports 7000-70xx properly on your router, so that they arrive at your server's local IP address? - Shendare |
Yes, able to play on PEQ's server with SoF client. No issues.
The server I am running is Angelox's repack server. Perhaps that doesn't support SoF client? I'm getting my titanium discs back this weekend. I'll see if that has any problems connecting. |
Here is my latest attempt at connecting to my server. I found this in the client debug file.
Code:
[Thu Jun 11 21:56:35 2009]00192:Initializing character select UI. I've ran eqemu in the past successfully (after many hurdles); but, never seen this problem before. Thanks for any insight |
Didn't get back in time to edit my last post.
Here is my server window listing in case that helps Code:
[Debug] [RULES__CHANGE] Set rule Combat:BerserkBaseCritChance to value 0.0599999 |
Can you post your start.bat file, and also what you have in your launcher and launcher_zones tables? Maybe you don't have them all matching up properly.
I am unsure if the AX repack works for SoF, but I assume it would. You might also want to post your server config file (make sure to remove your password). And, also verify for sure that you have Port Forwarding set in your router to forward port 9000 as well as ports 7000-7500 to your server. |
I do have port 9000 forward. I am only forwarding 7000 - 7100 however. Should I change that to 7500?
XML config file - LAN only until I get it running. Code:
<?xml version="1.0"> Launcher Table Name Dynamics Cities 0 Ships 0 zones 5 Launcher Zones Table (1 from each launcher) Launcher Zone Port Cities akanon 0 Ships freporte 1201 Nothing for the zones launcher There is no start.bat. AX Repack uses a .NET based launcher program. I fired up the program. I have a cmd window (as listed above) however, the tile bar is listed as such 0:timorous, 0 clients I hope that is enough info. I am using the repack for the bots and the old school EQ world. Hate starting in Glooming Deep :D |
Well, LAN setups can sometimes be harder to configure properly than Public ones. The hard part is this part of your config:
Code:
<!-- Only specify these two if you really think you need to. --> On a public server, you wouldn't even set that at all, you would leave that section commented out. Here is what I set mine to for my test LAN server: Code:
<!-- Only specify these two if you really think you need to. --> And, if the repack setup has some different special launcher, then that is probably why you are having a problem. I see a ton of zone launching in your server log and you don't have hardly any configured in your launcher_zones table. You need to put each zone you are launching in your launcher zones table to match your launcher program, or the server won't know where to send you. Maybe try setting them all to dynamics and remove all of the static stuff you have set until you can get that working. Your tables and launcher program have to match perfectly, which is probably your main issue atm. |
Just for the record, AX Repack has always been compatible with SoF, currently up to date with all the latest SoF code.
Since AX repack is really intended for play at home (EQOFFLINE), It has a minimal amount of zones loaded, which is 3 dynamic and the optional 5 ship zones. I'm able to play fine alone or with a friend like this. I've seen where mounting many zones (static/dynamic) consumes more resources, so this way, you're able to play even with a slower/older machine. If you look in tables launcher and launcher_zones, you'll see where there are over 100 zones available for static (split up 13 ways so you can choose), and up to 15 dynamic. You just have to set it up in your startup file. But be aware 100+ static zones are intended for around 100+ players and this will require more resources in bandwidth, CPU usage, etc. |
