Smedley's Solo Server
 

I tried EQMac not long ago when I got the nostalgia bug but quickly found out how hard it was to accomplish anything when the player base is low. So, I decided to turn to EQEmu for a quick fix. Unfortunately, all the solo servers I tried were tuned so that you would have to use a bot or box characters to make any reasonable progression in a relatively short amount of time. So I went ahead and created Smedley's Solo Server which will allow you to quickly reach max level and begin having fun doing what EQ does best. I setup some forums at http://smedley.forumotion.com if you would like to know more and here is a copy pasta about the server from the forums.

• Max level 65
• All clients supported. UF client is reccomended as not everything works on titanium
• All content tuned for solo play up through Planes of Power
• PoP content is much harder but should still be able to solo most of it
• Experience is turned up. Especially if you group.
• Brad McQuaid will help you with utilities such as spells and tomes
• Starting gear is nothing to write home about, go get your own!
• Translocator (Brad volunteered again) to all zones if you go there manually one time.
• Gate charm for everyone
• No experience loss until 65 and no corpses
• Boxing is allowed, but why would you want to?
• Live GM events all the time...

Hey some feedback about your server :)

Leveling is ok and grinding solo to level 65 is not that hard.
But starting to upgrade the starter gear is really pain soloing.
Lower levels bosses / draqons are mostly not up.
Other places like ToV, Kael etc.. are to hard with just the noob gear when starting.
Since there is no buff bot in the hub zone it is really hard to do something with just the starter gear.
After grinding to level 65 there is not much that can be done solo and you normaly need to group up.

Ofcourse you should add an merchant that sells the gems you need for the kael / thurg. armor.
So noobs with the starter gear could start grinding kael / thurg armor pieces.
A buff bot and dispell npc in hub zone would help alot.
AA XP should be increase too.

I leveled a beastlord 1-65 in an hour, geared him in 2 hours, and he can solo elemental planes for the most part....you're doing it wrong, start somewhere where you know you can farm....like uhh not dragons?

The only part i believe you is with leveling. hehe :)
But ofcourse i did really something wrong.

I had the same experience fun to level to 65 but newbie gear doesn't do you much good at higher levels so soloing is hard at 65. the quest was cool for epic 1 would have been nice to have access to epic 1.5 or 2.

Smedley's went down yesterday and it's still down. If anyone from there is on here, I am playing on Lootfest at the moment.

No clue what is up with the server. I'm still on deployment and I left it in the hands of woses. I have backups of the server but I won't be back home for a few more weeks.

I can host from you old back up, folks will have to deal with going backwards a bit, but most will probably be happy since the server got pretty wonky after you left and a lot of new scripts were added that really didn't add to the stability of the server.

My internet has been in the dark for some time, and I'm currently on a different internet connection so I have to get the ports re-forwarded, also, Raghnar, what scripts didn't help with the stability? I added one, un, uno script. The server will be back up once these ports are forwarded on this different IP, sorry for making you guys wait so long, if it isn't on today, it'll be on tomorrow.

seems the biggest prob was ppl started crashing / hanging on zoning... even the suggested solution didnt work for some ppl.. was fine at first :(.. tho its prolly also cos i use RoF.. prolly explains why i get it lol

We were all starting to think you just rage quit Woses. Disabling pm'ing on the old forums didn't help the situation. All it takes is a few words on here to let people know what's going on.

where are the smedley forums located?

http://smedleyssoloserver.no-ip.org/home.php is the address for the new forums, but they have been down since the server went down. He hosts the site as well as the server, and it's all down still.

I should have said scripts and db changes. There have been some positives but the crashes, zone hang ups and constant world resets have made it difficult to put it nicely.

Where in the wide wide world of sports are you hosting that you need a week to re-forward ports?

I love the server and was simply offering to get it back up since it didn't look like anyone knew your plans.

The server, and website, are now back up. Thank you for your patience. And Raghnar, I didn't need a week to do it, I needed a week to re-do all of my internet configurations. And zone hangups and world resets have nothing to do with scripts or Database modifications. Zone hang ups have to do with a slow response from the server to your computer, and that doesn't happen all the time, the world resets are a mandatory part of fixing old scripts such as the broken Plane of Air trials, etc. Enjoy the server.

Don't be so disrespectful, Raghnar, you're quite rude. John, I am done hosting the server, and with this community as a whole, I will be leaving. I am done with the hosting due to the fact I have no idea where to go or what to do and what I can and can't do, it is more of a burden on me than anything, I will be taking myself other places. Well the offer stands. I can host it and keep it the way it is.

You may find me rude Zamthos but you just strung a bunch of folks along just like you did with your previous server. It is getting old.

While we appreciated you keeping Smedley's running, bringing it up for a few hours and then bailing on all of the work that all of those folks put into their toons with 10 minutes notice is unacceptable. So ya I am going to be a bit rude to you.

But no hard feelings and good luck in whatever you find that does not burden you. Take care.

Well, I knew the /ragequit was coming. He kind of got tied down to it, even when he didn't want to run the server.

It would be nice if those server files and db could be transferred to someone else who can host it until John's return. We did put a lot of work into our characters, and there are some good people that played on Smedley's.

So before you do anything drastic Woses, take a moment to think about it.

Hey Zam, just wanted to thank you for hosting it while I was gone. I just got back into town and I'm starting to slowly pickup the pieces. I am restoring the forums at smedley.forumotion.com and they should be up here in a few. I have to find my backups and I'll get the server online as soon as I do. Thank you all for your patience while I was gone. :grin:

It appears that a majority of my former server patrons were left hanging when the server went down under the supervision of woses/zamthos. I am sorry I was not around to make sure things were running smoothly and for that I am sorry, however when the air force deploys you on an assignment, you can't just take a rain-check :)

In my absence it appears that Raghnar has assembled a talented crew of individuals to recreate what I had started. I commend you for stepping up to the plate! I spoke with raghnar/karsa today and offered to transfer what resources I have of the old server since I noticed that a majority of my former population now resides on his server. He declined my offer for which I do not blame him.

Nonetheless, in order to avoid duplicating efforts and running two server that are doing the exact same thing, I have decided to terminate Smedley's Solo Server. I will take the servers offline later today. I highly recommend having a go at karsa/raghnar's server as they have done a wonderful job of creating what I was looking for in a server in the first place.

In the meantime, I have plans on opening up a new server in the future that will be something of a new take on this old game we all love and enjoy. Until that time, I want to thank you for enjoying Smedley's Solo Server while you did. It has taught me a lot of valuable lessons on server administration! I hope you will join me when I release my next server installment and in the meantime, keep on playing! :D

Well Dang.. This server was so much fun! I played a Monk named Taybot and do not know where to go next. Any suggestions on a similar server? What is the name of Raghar's server?
