Crickets....

Anyone notice how dead the forum has been lately? Other than the entertaining posts by MarcusD, nothing has been really happening here. I know some will say that winter is slow for the Emu, but I would think that is the time things would pick up.

We need some good conspiracy theory thread.

Castinonya 12-13-2015 07:55 PM

Akkadius is actually not a person, but the remains of Verant, hoping to keep Everquest, his baby, alive.

provocating 12-13-2015 07:56 PM

Uleat opened up his own server yesterday, true story.

Akkadius 12-13-2015 08:02 PM

Dead is perception. Coders is always very alive in the background. I'll be making a pretty big news post here soon along with quite a few other things. And yes it is the holidays.

Other people can always start positive conversation and threads. And from what I see on a daily basis there is plenty going on in the forum

provocating 12-13-2015 08:04 PM

See, Akkadius is about to announce he IS Verant.

There is 225,587 Forum members and as you see below, there is 2552 players online.
Does this forum have bots ? (smirk)

Status: UP
Servers: 87
Players: 2552

Those are the server stats though. I am just saying lately there has not been that much forum activity. Maybe it just seems that way to me. Yes I know there is plenty going on with GIT as far as code changes in the background. I am just referring to forum activity.

You had my hopes up for some good playful banter, Hahaha

I actually had that "forum is quiet" feeling too, but that could be a good thing
in some cases. Meaning, a lot less support questions getting asked, so people
must be getting the help they need.
Not that the need will ever end, but it's slowed down right now.

Uleat 12-13-2015 08:19 PM

I actually opened my fly too..

That is exactly what I was wanting. None of these, "your server is going to fail" threads or other griping. Just some good fun.

Huppy 12-13-2015 08:33 PM

Thats something I don't understand, is some people's desire for competitiveness with the
servers. Not sure if their desire is to put their name in light , "Hey look at me, I got a
player base of 2000". Hahaha Almost like the "friend collectors" on Facebook, lol.
I prefer to remain a humble little underdog, having fun with the challenges of simply
piddling around with a server. Few people come, few people go, casual, down to earth.

It has a lot to do with this quote...

I was thinking back to the 90's when I set up an IRC server, (back in the days of DalNet,etc.),
That was my first challenge of any kind of server. I didn't really care about getting any
people to log on, but I had a lot of fun in learning all about it.
Actually I think I still have an old copy of the Bahamut IRCD kicking around. I was using
that and IRCD Services.

All of your conspiracy theories are belong to usss!

J3wish 12-13-2015 09:58 PM

Usually if there is a good conversation thread up, Kingly usually posts his opinion on the conversation and then it turns into a witch hunt for Kingly. *knock on wood*

Well, some people prefer to "do their dirty laundry in publuc", but if I ever had
a beef with someone, I would use the PM system to deal with it.

Here is my theory.

The project is actually so well developed, maintained and documented that people do not need to constantly run to the forums for help anymore.

Anytime I am developing a script or making a change, I can normally find it here. I do like a good forum conversation though.

Uleat 12-13-2015 10:28 PM

Kayen, that is DEFINITELY a conspiracy theory!!

I'm with Kayen. Generally only time I need to open my mouth is to help someone else or if I have a complicated question.

Now if I could just get enough players interested so I can implement content the way it was originally designed.

Think mechanics. Imagine a fight that that requires management of 3 separate NPCs, each with their own mechanics. But you can only keep 2 players online at any time (with their bots) and this fight is far too complicated for 2 people to complete. Realistically this fight needs 3-4 real people, but you have to dumb it down because you know you'll never have 3-4 real people playing reliably. Now imagine if you're one of the servers who is anti-bot/anti-merc. Now this 6-12 person fight has to be dumbed down for 1-3 people.

Also keep in mind that the fewer players you have, the less drastic difficulty increases can be. If you only ever have 1-3 players online, the difficulty change between tiers of content is fairly small. We're talking a few points of damage, a few thousand hp, etc. These difficulty changes can be much more drastic when you have a larger player base. This larger player base also allows you to more finely tune the mechanics behind that encounter, potentially creating not only a more difficult encounter, but a much more engaging one.

Simple fights are part of EQ's life, nothing will change that. But some of us have amazing ideas that we really never get a chance to act upon due to limited player-base.

BLUF: I design content months/years in advance, down to minute details. But during implementation reality kicks in and I have to cut things down to the point of crippling the fight.

If you guys are bored, you could always try finishing that wiki tutorial on how to make your own zones, since I still haven't found a single, coherent guide on doing it.

That type of information is not commonplace and only a few individuals would know how to do that.

I, personally, develop code and not content..and have no idea how to go about doing it.

EDIT: I meant to come back to this thread..but, forgot all about it...

Sometimes I wish I could right click on a store clerk to see if she "scowls, ready to attack"
