an Verant Detect EQW?
Hey do you know if Verent an tell you are runnin EQ in EQW?
Pleasetell me ASAP I just dont want my account killed on me if thy can but I also want to talk to my friends while play. If you can help thanks. |
No way to tell, its being done all on your side, and no info is being sent by EQW so I dont see how it would be possible unless verant was secretly sneeking a peek at your hard-drive.

possible yes legal no
|
Thanks alot for your help.

Verant will never find out you're using EQW unless you /tell Abashi "Hi i'm using EQW! ban me!"
OR if thay put code in eqgame to see if you have eqw.exe on your harddrive (illegal on there part and will never be done because of privacy) |
Well they could know if you are doing it, it's just that they can't do anything about it :D (Remember the good ol days of EQ scanning your favorites and web history? ;) )
|
LOL funny dude! If verant was scanning our computers without our knowledge or a search warrent they would be breaking the law and anything they found would not hold up in court even if it got that far!
|
Just do what I did and QUIT. :) I can't describe the freedom of not giving a rat's behind what VI thinks of my using EQW.

Theoretically - yes. EQW is loded in the Everquest process and can be detected without scanning your harddrive or other programs you running.
Legally - I am not sure. If they not scanning your hard drive or other processes and just look into their own process .... I would leave it to the lawers. Practically - if they will start banning people for using it - they might loose half of their customer base. |

Somewhat less than half- though a large chunk nonetheless. I would hope most people here stopped playing EQ on Verant servers a while ago- it promotes brain rot. |
Hey,
Razzle so I take it your a doctor then. So what did you get your PH.D in? How the brain functions playing video games? Also what did you major in?..... |
Legal to scan hard drives, if they want to
Didn't you ever read the EULA? I think they experimented with that for a while, but it may not be there anymore. They could put it back in if they wanted to though. They probably don't care, though. They know you can't run anything else with EQ's 320+ MB memory footprint. The only program I know of that can beat that is Oracle...

Database eq - table login_accounts
Showing records 0 - 30 (2063 total) We've got a bit of a following. |
What about resident memory?
This is just a guess from what I know of comps, but wouldn't it be possible for varant to scan the programs currently running in memory?
Somewhat in the way that a virus scanner checks for any viruses currently in memory. It's a theory. Feel free to blow it out of the water. :) -1018 |

ARGH! I had a nice long response to this, and then the website stopped responding so I lost it before it was posted! So I'm going to be briefer this time (maybe it was a good thing SF ate the post :)) Short answer -- yes, they can detect it if they want to. Then, EQW could do things to hide itself, then Verant could adapt, and so on, just like the virus wars (Norton makes anti-virus software, NortonBackRoom, uh, I mean Evil Hacker Terrorists from Afganistan* make new viruses, Norton improves anti-virus software, EHTs improve viruses, etc.) But will Verant waste time with something like that? Probably not. It would take time (and Verant's money) to combat EQW, and it would be a loosing battle (think RIAA vs. MP3). If Verant isn't smart enough to figure that out, then I guess we'll be annoyed by constant upgrades (think AOL vs. AIM compatible programs like Trillian). * yes, that was a joke about how it's good business for Norton to make viruses that it can cure -- I'm pretty sure they're not actually doing that |
You Have Been Enlightened! (3)
Hah! I hate it when they eat posts like that. "They" (the evil internet gremlins) do the same to me and seem to prefer detailed posts.
Anyways, thanks for the response. :) It does strike me as a rather trivial thing to ban paying customers over, but I certainly wouldn't want to go about announcing it, though. :p -1018 |
Tale of the past
I'll tell you an old tale friends...
Long Ago ... when the pixels were still all over the screens, there were that company "Verant" who got aware of the presence of an evil program named "EQW" they killed they first few to use this program... Then this program got bigger in popularity and the verant folk's could'nt kill everyone's account since they would have lost TOO MUCH!! So now they ignores it... Just dont talk about that on the servers... thats not a good thing to say... since tehy have logs... and yes they can know it without scanning your cpu... Hator, Ex-Officiel Verant GM And dont worry i wont say a thing... would be unwise since i "try" to use it too ... :p |
Heheheheheh
Do you know if it would be ok to go and say "Hey GM! PPL ARE USING EQEMU MORE THAN THIS!" LOG off, delete char, maybe even account, and then post a couple messages in Message Board on verant?
it would piss em off, and I would luv 2 c their face. (excuse short sentances) BUT...IF ITS ILLEGAL AND COULD SHUT DOWN, I WONT DO. |
Don't antagonize anyone...
Theres no point in it, and it's stupid, and it doesnt prove a thing except that you have nothing better to do with your time. Whats the point in trying to piss them off? They're just trying to do a job, raise kids, and have a life just like the rest of us. Regardless of the legality of it, it is not in the spirit of this project to 'harass' other projects, or people, especially the one this entire venture is based upon. My personal opinion is antics like that, that could possibly draw negative attention to the project, should be a bannable offense. |
Ai ai Cap'n
Okies, Wont harrass them, but somebody has been sending anonamous messages to me, like tons of em, saying"Are you afraid??" its really pissing me off.

Anyway, keep in mind that without verant, EQ wouldn't exist, you wouldn't be on that forum, you couldn't use EQemu, etc etc... whatever they do, their techs try to do their best, i could bet it.
Of course, there's those eternal questions of "why do i pay for a buggy game ?", "why do i pay for a non existing customers service", "why do i need 512Meg or ram?" etc... but you know, if you compare how much you paid for your eq account to the time you spent playing, believe me, its far from being expensive, i considerate it as almost free in fact... Calculate how much cash you would have spent if you weren't playing EQ so much... No, seriously, i m myself a developper, and i m persuaded that VI's job isnt that bad, you can't guess how many firms (at least here, in France) aren't even able to work as well as VI does, even for professional applications :( so well, all considered, its not that bad... |
