Reqs to run DR5 server.

Just a question. To run a server to test a DB on my computer, what reqs would I need. The server box would not be running the client. It would have the server w/ two zones running ( the one I'm in and the one I'm moving into) minilogon and SQL . I might have a few friends log on to help test. What other programs are needed? How much hard drive space is needed to house the server DB and character profiles? Also on a side note... how close to "live" is the current DB? Thanx in advance.

The HD space needed is very minimal.

What you need to be more concerned with is the horsepower of your cpu and the amount of memory you have.

if its just a test server for 1-2 people it can be dont on a P1 333MH with 256 ram....

Thanks

I think my spare box has slightly better stats than that. Thank you for the info. Now with 5 being released as a bin, I don't have to worry with compiler versions. I hope to be testing this weekend. I'll be building a new box early next year, I hope I can then run an open Emu server. I want to thank the dev team for doing such great work, and for putting up with we users. Also a thank you to the world builders and packet collectors. Also to those that already run servers. I hope to be giving back to the project someday soon.

i suggest min reqs should be;
500mhz
256 sdram pc-133

thats for about 5 or 6 people
to run for like 20 peeps, it CAN be done, but is not recommended on
1.3ghz
512 DDR
after that, you will need multiple servers
1.3ghz w/512DDR for your world and db, and 5 dynamic zones
2.0ghz w/1024DDR for about another 30 zones :)
thats what im running right now, working on getting the third comp up for more zones

you sure about this? That does not seem like enough horse power for 30 zones to me.

30 zones would take a powerful machine. I think I heard that it took about 24 megs RAM/zone. This was long ago, but I think it's still in the range of 20-30 megs RAM/zone. The processing speed should be probably 2GHz+ for 30 zones.

You would need at least 720 free megs of RAM for just zones, and a healthy, strong processor.

1024MB RAM might be able to haul this, assuming that you have no graphical client running (linux running server mode with just console).

I can only run 2 zones with a 2.0GHz and 1024MBs of DDR.
The database is TCS' moving databse.
When I get in I automatically have a ping of 7000+ just standing still. This is over the lan too. With an empty zone, it's fine.

Chrysm, is that 2GHz machine dedicated? Is it Windows or Linux? Does it have any other processes running besides zone and world and mysql?

arkaria 11-20-2003 08:56 AM

He's prolly running Winblows.

2ghz should not lag at all with world/mysql/2xzone

a_Guest03 11-20-2003 09:04 AM

tcsmyworld's db may have a serious problem that is gunking up the system in that particular release. If that's the case, it might be on a per-zone basis that he experiences these problems.

Chrysm is a linux advocate, so I'd assume linux... I am unsure, however.

Chrysm 11-20-2003 10:25 AM

Linux of course!

When I log into a zone, everything is ok... then steadily the ping gets higher to about 7000 then if I execute a command or anything it takes about 2 minutes for the result to show (this is even targeting an NPC). Then the ping steadily climbs to about 12000 for about 5 minutes and then drops back down to 7000.

All this with no network traffic. I think it may just be the database because, with empty zones, I get great ping rate on the lan like 1 and 1 or 10 and 90 at max

Chrysm you should check out this thread, it adresses some issues with Linux, along with how to help with finding them, and also several fixxes

I have been covering it =) look at the 3rd page at the bottom hehe! I haven't implemented any of the fixes or updated my CVS.

I'll give it a whirl tonight and get the lates DB if there is one and see if that helps.

rubyrhinosaur 11-20-2003 12:06 PM

the actual lag sounds like the threading in the code, taking up too much time to complete a process.... and other processes dependant on that process get lagged ... its a chain reaction...
give the devs some time... and it should be fixed
