GAMAVA

I also post this on my old eq guild website..
i am getting tired of these friggin moms(sorry to any moms heh) against something kids like(moms against this moms against that give up already!) groups i just read this article on the MAVAV(Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence) right here http://www.mavav.org/resources/ and i just have to say they are stupid the facts they have are completely wrong. here is my revised version of that article for Gamers Against Mothers Agianst Videogame Addiction and Violence(althought i am against real life violence)(my own little %^&* i hate you group)

Videogames: The Frightening Truth that the MAVAV cant stand!:

Fact: Videogames are now a hobby or a fun thing to pass time and yes game makers are taking advantage of it just like model plane companys they are taking advantage of the idea that people like to build model airplanes!

Fact: Videogames have been proven to stimulate the development of the proper social skills and interaction needed for a long happy and enjoyable life. Young gamers are prone to being enlightened with happyness and peace all throughout their life

Fact: Health studies have found that even those casual gamers suffer from high self-esteem and self-pride compared to their athletic and more socially accepted peers in their same age group. Young gamers were found to be more likely to become smart and becoming social outcasts(and thats a bad thing??).

Fact: Hardcore gaming not only leads to intellect and good changes, but to law and order as well. Hardcore gamers never buy computer videogames(im a hardcore gamer and only 1 of my games left on this coputer is warez). Instead, downloading illegally copied videogames or

omg...that "fact" is total BS...i play because its...fun? wtf? i mean...there may be some people who play to escape real life problems...but the majority or people play for fun. something these people probably dont understand/have never experienced. so lame...

I believe there may be some moms out there who need to get laid more often...

Although some of their statements do hold some truth, most of their blame is misguided or incorrectly divided among the entertainment industry.

Sure, in a video game you may actually get the chance to "kill" something, but what about movies, that have infinitely better graphics, and are so main streamed that killing turns out to be very "cool" in many cases.

Books turn into movies, movies turn into videogames. So, how is that videogames get all of the blame? I'm not saying books are bad in any way, but come on, videogames the root of all evil, give me a break.

If your kid thinks it's alright to go out and kill people, then the only one to blame is yourself, for not TEACHING your kid right from wrong. From not taking the time to listen to their problems and give them some damn support in life when the only other place to turn was escaping life altogether. You failed as a parent when you allowed your child to be SO INFLUENCED by an outside source, that it over ruled everything you ever did, or didn't do, for that kid.

Of course, for some people it's too late, but seriously, every negative thing they described on that page, has been happening since long before the introduction of videogames and the thought of addiction to them.

Well, that stuff makes me sick, and although as I said, some of what they say has some merit, most of it is complete bullshit or misguided blame.

/rant off

Hope that made some sense, or some contribution to this post.

This crap has been going on since before I was a teenager in the mid 80's. Back then they blamed D&D for kids killing people. Before that it was Judas Priest. I listened to JP and I played D&D and I've never killed anyone...yet. ;)

It's a worthless discussion really. I'm ashamed I even posted a comment to it though. :)

I do however, still stand by my claim that those mothers need to get some action...

samandhi 03-03-2004 05:12 PM

I cant believe I am posting to this also hehe.. But:

The mothers are peeved because there are all these things out there that THEY dont like, and want to keep from reaching their children's hands. The problem lies not with the video game makers, but within the parenting abilities. Most mothers out there (namely the ones complaining the most) do NOT know how to control the content that reaches their children... Trust me, I live with one of them, and we often fight about me being what she calls "Adolf Hitler" with her children. I will NOT let them watch movies that are rated R and even some that are PG13 (they are 9 and 13). So, in a way I DO understand where they are coming from, but dont condone the fact that they are blaming everyone but themselves.

An example of this hypocrasy (if you will), is ciggerettes, or even cars.. Parents dont allow their children to smoke at those ages (well, most dont anyhow), and they dont let them drive cars till they are a certain age... Does the fact that driving is VERY dangerous make it the car company's fault when a child does something he/she is not supposed to do? No, it is the parent's fault for not guiding them properly in the right direction... N'uff said... Though I could go on and on <smile>.

There was a time (my age will show here) when HBO and Cinemax would *not* show any R-rated movies before 8pm. Now they'll show anything at just about any time. Sign of the times, I guess...

Shadow-Wolf 03-04-2004 10:00 AM

lol wind you know you like it now that they play r movies all the time now

Windcatcher 03-04-2004 01:28 PM

Actually it makes me very angry. Many of my friends have small children now and I don't like it that it's harder for them to keep their kids away from this stuff. I'm not in their shoes yet, but that doesn't mean I won't in the future. If I was in their shoes, it would make my blood boil. As for myself, I'm 34 -- if I want to see an R-rated movie, I'll go rent it or buy it.

personally i like the fact that they play R-rated movies anytime now...i think it is stupid that you have to be 17 to see an R-rated movie in theaters...yet i can watch one anytime on HBO (and can even watch the occasional softcore  )...but it tends not to matter anyways cus me being 16 me and my friends always sneak into R-rated movies anyways :P

argar 03-04-2004 03:35 PM

a kid who went to school with me his parents didnt ever let him play games, he graduated , with full college scholarship. He got to college, played a video game and ended up not ever going to class because he had never played one and never really had fun.so if a parent keeps there kids from playing video games eventualy they will leave the parents and meet video games..

RexChaos 03-05-2004 05:50 AM

AHHH!!! Please please please! Let's not give any more credit to these nimrods. Let this discussion go. Save yourselves! Let's get back to playing some violent games okay? ;)

ryder911 03-05-2004 08:20 AM

BULL SHIT

MMORPG videogames were recently labeled as one of the top 10 leading causes of students dropping out of high school.

This article is horrible. It trys to make sterotype more than anything. My grade havent dropped because of EQ or DAoC. I'm not unhealthy. The lady who wrote this should be one to talk about people being unhealthym, I guarantee that she is overwieght :D 62% of americans are over weight and 26% are over weight, just wait there going to start saying that EQ made all these people overweight and obese. Im in better shape then most people my age. Makes kids be social outcast? Ya ok, i beleive that. Kids who are social outcast are usually social outcast before they play mmorpg's and become "hardcore" gamers. If a kid who has a parent who smothers him like these parents want to do I gaurantee the kid is going to be a social outcast.
