If your EQ crashes or hangs when selecting a character...
 

** Notice: This post assumes you play on Winter's Roar. If you do not play on Winter's Roar see the note at the bottom. **

If your EQ crashes, hangs, the screen turns black, etc. when selecting a character then you probably patched to the recent Sept 14 patch. To fix it do the following:

Get the following files from the 8/11 build*:
help\help.html
help\tips\TOTD.txt
help\tips\ctxguild.html
help\tips\ctxtributebenefit.html
help\generalcommands.html
help\hotkeywindow.html
(*I know the policy of the board and IRC server so I will not be offering these files. You need to find some way of getting them legally.)

Then run the Winter's Roar patcher to fix your eqgame.exe, eqmail.dll, and various other important files, and click "Run." You should be playing EQ normally.
