Server on a different Computer
 

Sorry, this has probably already been asked, I looked and couldn't find on the boards:

I am going to get a new computer in a couple weeks and I want to run my server off that computer and play on it with this computer. How do I do that so I am still serverOP and can work on the database with a different computer? They will both have win98 1E. Don't know if you need the stats of the computers, maybe there is a requirement on the computers I need, but here are the stats:

Computer I will be playing off of:
333mhz, 16mb video card, 320mb ram, 4gig hard drive, Cable Modem on network card

Computer I will be running server off of:
1.6ghz athlon, 64mb video card, 512mb ram, 40gig hard drive, Cable Modem on network card

The computers will not be hooked together in any way except for the Cable.

Yes you can. Frankly running the server on the 333MHz computer might be better, EQ will definatly run a lot better on the new computer.

I honostly have no idea how to set up a LAN :( It will probably cost more money than I got to get it installed also. I will figure something out, like working on the database on my new computer then loading it onto the internet and downloading it with the old computer.

I doesn't have to be setup as a lan, in your case (2 computers on 2 seperate cable modems) just use the internet IP's instead of lan IP's that would normally be used. It is really just like setting up a server for someone on the internet to use.

You have 2 completely seperate cable modem connections? Or are both computers hooking to a hub/router uplinked to a cable modem? Makes a big difference in how you set it up..

I don't know how to explain it. It will not cost more a month to do this, so probably on the same connection, but I have to buy another modem and network card for my new computer. I was never good at Cisco stuff, hehe, failed that class with a 29% :eek:

Well, with one connection, you only need one cable modem, unless you are purchasing an extra ip from the cable provider. Immensely superior, but costs more. Most likely you are going to end up with a cable modem - > hub -> both computers. I'd suggest buying a linksys or dlink cable router, or something of that sort... If you are indeed going to have 2 completely seperate cable modems, nevermind then. Note that your computers will not be directly networked together that way though, they may as well be in completely different houses unless you put seperate network cards in each one and hook them together with a hub..
