A little confused about OS
Please don't blast me but I've been looking around for about 2 weeks or so and can't seem to find what Windows OS I should use. Any help would be appericated.

You can use any version of windows from Windows 2000 and up. You might even be able to use Windows 98 but I am not sure of that.

i'm not sure 98 has the necessary threading support. worth a try, but my guess is you need at least NT4.x or win2k.

I am running on a w2k with no issues ... but my guess would also be that you need an NT based system.

Thank you very much. I wasn't sure.
I heard that XP Pro might be a problem. Is there any truth to that? I was hoping to XP Pro as I has a spare computer laying around that has it. |
XP can be a problem since the TCP/IP stack is purposely crippled.
The best bet is either 2000, any windows server, or the best solution is Linux (Fedora Core 5 seems to work particularly well although I also run a dev server on ubuntu). |
I have run the Emulator on Windows 2000, Server 2003, Windows Xp, Debian, and Gentoo, all with the same hardware configuration. While I did not have a problem getting it setup and running on any of these OS's I did find that the server ran the best on Linux hands down. While I have tried many different flavors of linux in the past, I have only ever setup EqEmu on the two I mentioned earlier. Out of these I have liked Gentoo the most; however, this is mostly personal preference. So my point is, if you are willing to take the time to learn linux (or already know enough about it) setup a machine running linux for EqEmu and you will not be disappointed.

I think I might try Linux. It's better for the pocket book and I know a tad about Linux. If I have problems, I'm sure I'll be back in here with questions. Speaking of questions. It's pretty much just CPU power and RAM that I need right? I've got some spare stuff sitting around and I pretty sure that I can build a full system out of it. Thanks again for the help.
