Login Server, Wireless
I am having trouble connecting to the login server through my wireness connection. I get the connecting to server for 20-30 seconds then a message telling me to check my internet connection. It is fine.
I can connect if I turn off my wireless and connect through a normal connection so it is not a problem with the game or the server and I don't have a firewall or anything like that. I dont want to have to turn off my wireless and plug in the normal wire everytime I want to play EQ. Anyone know what could be causing the problem? |
If you actually read about wireless internet it states it shouldn't be used for online gaming. This is the main reason I don't have a wireless network and just ran wires.
There is a delay in the communication which is causing the time out, a lot of games have added support for wireless connections, but even EQ live will disconnect some people. |
Hmm. Ok then. Damn, eq in bed was sounding damn good. Guess I will have to sit at my desk. Thanks for the reply though. I guess EQ is just too old for much wireless support. Do you if using normal wire to connect to login then using wireless afterwards would work? or would I just get disconnected?

Switching wouldnt work either because of your laptop changing connections. You will be disconnected from the server, needing to log all the way back out then back in only to get the same problems.

Pick up a router from walmart for $15

No, you actually can get true routers for that cheap nowadays. True hubs are actually more expensive (closer to $100 for 4 or 5 port). Go figure ;)

I've played EQ both on live and on EqEmu with a laptop and wireless router connection.
When I started, I had a horrible time. There are 7 wireless networks within range of my house. My laptop kept switching connections and I'd get disconnected constantly. That changed when I changed my network to a security-enabled wireless network, and set my laptop to automatically connect to my network as a preferred network. After that, everything worked great. IF you're using Windows XP, the best place to start is to make sure your network is listed in the preferred networks box (Network Connections->Wireless Network Connection->Wireless Networks). |
There is only 3 other connections in range of my laptop and they are never on at 3am, which is when I play eq in bed. I have it set up to only connect to my wireless and my wireless has a security protocol thingy. It is not the speed. I can download files from the internet through my wireless at 300k+ and upload at 40k+ which should be well above the minimum required to connect to an online server. I also play a lot of lan games with my wireless and although I might get a bit of lag sometimes it is not a major problem. I don't really want to go out and buy more hubs and/or routers because knowing my luck it will probably not work. I can learn to live with playing at my desk I guess.

PING is your friend.
Wireless has too much overhead for good pings, and is not a stable connection like wired is. Even your refrigerator compressor kicking on or whatever can cause a spike in wireless radio waves that can drop your gaming connection. Wireless = bad for gaming. |
I have played EQ for 6 hours straight on wireless without a single hiccup.
As with most things, just because it's the prevailing opinion doesn't mean it's that way for everyone. |
Wireless stability counts on many things.
How far away are you? whats your walls made of, whats your floor / ceilings made of, do you have wireless phones/cellphones / PDA's. etc etc etc When I was in Texas I lived in Texas I was 2 blocks away from an Amy communications post that made it so even cell phones and cordless phones didnt work when they keyed up. Now I'm in PA and live in a house with the original log walls / floor, so i haven't been able to get one working. Anything can interfere with the signal, including a neighbors CB. If you got the $ you can set up a blue tooth or wifi connection from your house, but I would rather take a little time to run a wire and forget about it. |
The wireless router is on my desk in the same room about 10m away from my bed with nothing in the way. It just plain refuses to work. I can connect to pretty much everything else including my other computers on the lan and transfer stuff at speeds much faster than any internet connection and it seems stable enough then. I could understand if it didnt work sometimes or if it was slow or laggy but I just cant connect to the login server. There is nothing in the area that could be interfering with it, nothing that I know of anyway. I have bluetooth so maybe I will look into that but the wire is probably easier.

Like they said wireless can work fine depending on your setup and situation. I actually ran an eqemu server from a wireless connection on my spare box for a while and noone had any problems ever connecting or being dropped. A lot of people actually told me they had a better connection and ping on my server than almost any other. If the router and PC that are connecting are relatively close and there isn't any other electrical equipment nearby you will probably be fine. My connection said my signal was 93 though. So I would say if you can get a good signal you will be ok probably. A few things that will mess a wireless connection up that I can think of off hand are:
Microwave Air Conditioning Refrigerator Television Really almost anything that draws a decent amount of Electricity. If your router and PC are not close to any of these things and there are not a ton of others in your neighborhood on Wireless you will most likely be fine. If there are a few others in your neighborhood on wireless go through the different channels and see which gives you a better signal and use it. |
