The Irreverent is coming back..

Now that the house, office, and multi servers has been moved successfully it is time to restart The Irreverent. Being a highly modified code, quest, and database server it was unique because it provided a level-based approach to soloing the entire game. While a lot of its code exists on the new solo servers out there, not all the secrets were given out.

So now that the hardware has been dusted, code rehashed, and raids dusted its time to decide a new fate to the game. I'm open to several options

oldlurker 09-09-2007 08:24 AM

Imho running an public server is not about being unique but being there in a year from now.
So many servers come and go that had some code or database fixes or enhancements that where not shared with the community...

John Adams 09-09-2007 08:45 AM

I'll opt for being unique AND being around a year from now. :)

Good luck with the relaunch.

Wizzel 09-09-2007 08:54 AM

I agree with oldlurker for once. People should share code to further the emu but as far as the server, I don't quite care. There are bigger and crazier servers in the works. I voted for share the code, but if there was an option "fix your forums", I would have chosen that.

I voted public.I was about to PM you on that subject when i seen the poll.I didnt know it was private till i seen the poll.

I was going to ask you where i could get the scaled down level DB because im in the hospital alot and there is no Inet connection there.Im expected to be there for a very very extended time. They've not given me the full details as to how it will be worked(in-time/out-time) but the nurse told me the procedure could take around 4 years. They are talking of replacing my skin from my knees to the back of my head-so go figure.Soloable EQ was my thoughts on how it shouldve been since day one and i applaid the hell outa what you done.So thats why i voted public release.Ty

First, please do not take this the wrong way, People having their own servers and staffs are great.

However, What about the possibility, instead of another server, get involved in one that’s already under way and help build its code / user base up?

That way, it’s just not another server with low population, but instead enhancing a server with more support and building on it to make it more desirable for users to join and play on?

I might be completely off tap here and I certainly don’t want to discourage you from having your own server/staff/users. I’m just offering another option/possibility.

Cheers,

froglok

Froggy, same reason everyone in EQ had to be a guild leader of a 6-man guild.

One of the good things about EMu is, everyone can play god for a while, until they realize it's futile, and no matter what they do it's never good enough and quit.

It really is kinda of ironic how much work goes into a server that "sucks". A guy can spend 720 hours tweaking code, database, hardware, network, etc, and there will be players that spend all their time bitching about things: "WHY DOESN'T FRENZY WORK?!"... "WHY DO YOU HAVE TO REBOOT FOR AN UPDATE?!#$!@"... "THIS SERVER IS BULLSHIT!@#!"...

The reality of it is, it's become human nature to run around and find the problems with every situation. People spend too much time focusing on the negative, rather than looking at the positive. Ultimately, this damages the person that's bitching more than anyone else, as they are never happy, and ultimately anything that should be relaxing leisurely only causes them more and more stress.

I'd really think hard before putting up a fresh server, but that's just me. On the otherhand, I know of several servers in need of skilled devs (DB and Source).

As I've always said, the only people to "suffer" from a server going tits up are the players. Admins can walk away, and usually toss up another server in a few mos to try new ideas. Take Zeb/Abyss as a prime example. There are upwards of 10,000 characters created in that database, most of them level 70. That means, people really put a lot of effort into their toons to get where they got. The server went down, came up under a new admin. Went down again, up again (for donations), then down again... now it is up again, but about to go down for maybe the last time.

Why? Because players have this mentality that they can come to a server and call the admin and GMs names, or berate them, or act disrespectful considering the immense effort behind running "a public server". No respect? Accusations? Mass hysteria and panic? Heroic efforts made in /ooc to drive players from the server because one dude doesn't agree with the content?

Server: Dead.

Admins honestly do not need this grief. And, I no longer have any disrespect for those who try and get beaten to death by ungrateful little fuckers who game on their hardware for FREE.

/rant off
WTS DB, free.

Irreverent 09-11-2007 05:25 AM

I'm all about taking in new staff to help admin, code, and update. So yes, I agree I'm all about looking people who want to help to join in.

Since this is a unique server(other than a lot of new solo servers poping up since the idea started), its best that it keeps walking on its own feet. If you don't agree, you're free to disagree and play elsewhere. I don't want to help another server because I feel if you create something, especially quite unique, you want to keep true to the cause that started it all.(How many diablo knockoffs are there?!) So I'm staying loyal to my dream and my players.

It is a total player whipe, but the DB stays. Due to the fact that the different early betas had advantages to leveling that the most recent players didn't have it was unfair and unbalanced. So moving forward, everyone starts on an even keel. It took a lot of biting my tounge, especially since we had over 2k unique accounts and about 4k characters on it. But I think everyone had fun with the first version, saw how easy it was to level up, and now everyone equal again it will be just as fun. As usual, my 0% tolerance rule will quickly ban anyone who effects other players(grudges against me are fine...cause everyone has the write to complain/suggest).

But back to the staff. I'm not handing out GM titles to anyone. You've got to prove to me in many ways that you've capable of doing it. Basically if you're asking me for the title, you're guaranteed not to get it. My staff is players that go above and beyond their character to make it a good experience for everyone. Those are the people I approach and ask for them to join my staff. That way we don't have egos, a-holes, or a newbie running around. I'd rather have no staff than a bunch of underachievers. It might make slow growth, but I'd rather have constant and good growth than having random luck on quality.

So just a warning John Adams, I'm back. :)

Irreverent 09-11-2007 05:30 AM

As far as sharing my code, I always do. Everything I find, see, change, and test is always in John Adam's or the appropriate forum's threads.

I'm just a thinker, not a coder, so I usually bring it to the pro's to do the updates in CVS.

And as far as the DB, that's to come soon as well. Just need to get my website udpated to allow that. Then we'll add a new version to the PEQ/Angelox/Irreverent mix. I'm still working on the versioning and updating portions of the database since its both perl and rows that have been greatly changed.
