Bypassing protected networks?

Hi, I spend a lot of time at my university which has a campus wide wireless internet which I connect to on my laptop, but when i try to play EQemu It says cannot connect to server even though I am connected to the interent. For some reason I can play other online games like guildwars on the network but not EQ, is there a way to bypass the firewall or whatever is stopping me from connecting to the server? thanks.

Most campuses use Proxies and there is no way around them. Many of them block most ports, including the port that is required for EQEmu, port 5998. Basically, there probably isn't much you can do about it unless you can convince the network admins there to open up that port for you :P

It's possible to utilize a proxy but it isn't simple, nor do I really want to explain it. Let's just say, no easy fix if admins say no. :)

You could use a tunneler, but they charge per bandwidth and if you get caught doing that, well... yeah.

Alternatively, if you have access to a computer on the outside that will be on all the time, you can set up your own tunnel.

edit: At my school, I don't think they'd care if you used a tunnel. I think their primary reasons for blocking all the ports is to prevent unnecessary bandwidth usage, help curb filesharing (from off-campus), and to keep the network more secure, not to keep people from playing online games.

Funny story, when I was in my first year in residence, WoW had just come out. It played horribly on the network (6-10k ms latency) for the first semester. The time second semester came around, they must have changed something because it magically started working perfectly. I figure one of the network admins started playing and did the necessary modifications so he/she could play at work.
