Having problems with entering world in 3.6 (sorry)
After temporarily abandoning work on my EQEmu DBs (partly as a result of being distracted by Morrowind and NWN!) I've now decided to start work again. I downloaded the latest version (3.6) along with item DB and minilogin, patched EQ (this was yesterday - I assume 3.6 works with the latest patch), replaced eqhost.txt and sourced in all the DBs (including my NPCs etc., which seemed to work OK).
The first error I got was that I couldn't get past the server select screen, attempting to go to the character screen would dump me back to the server screen and the world server window would display a message similar to "wrong password for name "eqemu"". After reading on this forum I found that I needed to create an account with the name and password eqemu (although this account was in db.sql, somehow it didn't get loaded in properly), after doing this I can now get as far as the character screen. After creating a character, however, I'm unable to enter the world - doing so brings up the loading screen for 5 seconds or so, then dumps me back to the server screen. The world server displays a message like "invalid player profile structure" or similar (can't remember the exact words). This seems to indicate that my version of EQ is incompatible with 3.6, but I only patched yesterday and 3.6 was out on the 7th - has there been a new patch since then? |
First off, welcome back Drawde! Long time no see! I, like you, got sucked into the NWN/Morrowind nightmare, still playing NWN, just waiting for some of the persistant worlds to mature before investing too much time in them (some neat LOTR P.W.s out there)
I dont believe there has been a patch recently. Still works for me since the last patch, so Im thinking something might have gotten goofy when you pulled your database in. Some people reporting weird db errors have had luck dumping then resourcing the entire database. Are you using minilogin? |
Yes, I am using minilogin. I'll try doing what you say, dumping the DB then re-sourcing it without my addons, then see if it works. I'll also try and get a copy of the exact error message it gives (if it doesn't work).
I'm still enjoying playing MW and NWN, however I thought I'd try out EQ/EQEmu again. I still like EQ's unique style, with each race having its own city and lands, even if the setting is unoriginal. I'd really like the fourth Elder Scrolls game (if there is one) to include the whole of Tamriel, like the original ES1 "Arena" - obviously it'd have to be scaled down a lot to be manageable design/creation-wise (even if PCs have the memory for it), but it'd be great to be able to travel between distinct lands with their own people, language, architecture, unique items etc. I have my own website now at http://www.edwardpinniger.bctalk.net which is still under construction, but I plan to have an EQEmu page there soon where I can put my DB addons for download. |
I'd guess the problem is probably with minilogon, i don't think anyone is supporting it anymore, as I haven't created my own server in a couple of releases now, I couldnt tell you for sure.
Can anyone state to the current usability of minilogon? ---- offtopic ------ I agree, Morrowind being so scaled down was rather depressing, I loved the vastness of ES 1, you could walk for hours outside of the towns and find all kind of cool things. Daggerfall had the vastness, but it was largely empty. It was amazing in the first one how you could walk 20 miles outside of the city and just find inns and shops, or dungeons randomly scattered. Morrowind is the first one to feel like a real world though, they really put alot of detail into it, but I would have rather seen the entire world. They have the graphics engine down, now they just need to build a bigger world, and refine some other things. Like shops closing at night, what kind of thief can't make a midnight robbery. Also, horses/carts, and owning your own ships. I don't like the fact that you can just squat in anyones house either. They have a good thing there, now they just need to crank down the nuts and bolts. (dual wielding in combat for one) |
Solved the problem - it was my stupid mistake, I was using the zone9x.exe from 3.4 rather than the new zone.exe (since it had a different filename, it wasn't overwritten when I installed 3.6). Since I use a custom "boot2zones.bat" (you only really need 2 zoneservers up with minilogin) and hadn't updated it, I was still running the 3.4 zoneserver which not surprisingly was incompatible.
Anyway EQEmu now works OK, and seems much more stable than earlier versions in terms of zoning, linkdeath etc (the lack of stability was the one thing I found most annoying in EQEmu) I've encountered a few bugs (notably with merchants and the combat system) but overall it seems OK. All the NPCs seem to be in the right places and the faction values seem to work (they were rather messed up in 3.4, despite appearing OK in the DB). I'll post here when I've got the EQEmu page up on my site. |
Glad to see you back in action! If I get some time I would love to chat with you some in IRC Been busy at work lately, so AFK in irc despite showing up as online :(
