New Issue Launching Game After System Reformat
I'm experiencing a common issue that, after searching through the forums and FAQs, I have been unable to find a solution for. I've tried everything suggested but cannot resolve the problem. Here's a summary:
Until recently, I've been using the EQEmulator with my copy of the Titanium client for months without a single problem. Two days ago, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows. The reformat went through without any irregularities. After full reinstallation of EQ Titanium, I followed the EQEmu guide exactly as before. When playing EQ before the reformat, I grew accustomed to the "eqgame.exe has encountered an error and needs to close .... " issue. It came up anytime I accidently tried to load the game full screen and I always worked around by loading in windowed mode and switching to full in-game. Before launching EQ for the first time after the format, I edited eqclient.ini to allow for windowed mode just like before. The new installation of the game launched like normal but I was encountered with an error I had never received previously. When clicking "PLAY EVERQUEST!" to connect to the server, I get the delayed black screen, crash to desktop. Once or twice the loading screen has been displayed briefly in distorted resolution before crashing the same way. Here's what my eqclient file looks like: Quote:

I'm running on Windows XP, 1680x1050 desktop resolution. Based on past experiences, I believe this is likely a resolution issue but I could be totally wrong. I did have to make some game display adjustments the first time I ran EQ before the reformat but I didn't run into the problem the same way I have now. Any suggestions? Anything totally obvious that I'm forgetting? Please let me know if you need any more information. Thank you for any help you can provide. |
Make sure you've installed DirectX 9.0c, and change your desktop resolution to 1024x768 before you run it the first time. The config program has a problem with widescreen resolutions. After you run it the first time you can tweak the ini with no problems to use a different resolution.

I have DirectX 9.0c and have attempted to run the game in all supported resolutions, windowed and non windowed modes. I have changed my desktop resolution to all settings, widescreen and standard, including 1024 768. I've reinstalled the client three times. I'm playing on a single core. My drivers are up to date and I've attempted using older video drivers.
Still having the same issue. Game menu loads up just fine, logs in, and lists all the EQ emu servers. After clicking to connect to a server, the game loads for about ten seconds, turns to black screen, adjusts gamma back and forth, and sometimes even shows the beginnings of the loading splash screen. Then it kicks me to the desktop, very occasionally showing a 0x0000142 error message but usually nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, guys |
Are you able to use other games or heavy graphics programs? Are the discs you installed Everquest from damaged? I ask that because sometimes drives will read through scratches & errors but the information that is copied to the drive can be corrupt. Are you using any software now that you didn't use prior to reloading your computer that might be interfering with Everquest? Software with program launch control such as firewalls are really bad about causing problems with other programs.
You said you installed directx9c but how did you install it? From the Everquest disc or did you download dxwebsetup.exe or dx9c redistrubutable from Microsoft? |
Have you tried disabling sound by using the Options button before logging in and then exiting EQ and restarting it with sound disabled? I have seen issues with sound drivers in the past that caused similar crashes.
Here is a post that I briefly skimmed that seems like it may be sound related too (found from google search of the error in our debug file output): http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/po...opic_id=125071 |
Thanks for the feedback. I've had a little more time now to look at the issue.
- Other games and heavy graphics programs are working fine. - At a glance, the discs appear to be in great shape. - I've gone through about everything I can think of in terms of programs that weren't present during my previous instance of windows. I've attempted to launch after disabling the firewall, antivirus software, security programs, etc. - DirectX 9.0c was installed via the MS redistributable. I didn't receive any kind of prompt to install/update DirectX during EQ install. - Also tried disabling sound. With the same crash still occuring I ran five attempted launches of EQ and copied the varying DBG reports. Each time, the game crashed at the same point. Everything loading up to server select seemed fine. However, here are the last lines of the five DBG reports leading up to crash: Quote:
Could be that I just had a dirty install somehow. I'm going to attempt to reinstall and see if I can get a fix. |
Looks like a bad install as far as I can tell. Though, the GlobalDRK_chr.s3d you mentioned is no real issue. That file has always spit out a debug IIRC, and it doesn't cause any problems.
I haven't seen those "Failed to init HMD from WLD data: " errors before, so those don't look good heh. Are you sure you didn't do a custom file patch from an EQEmu server or Shards of Dalaya? Here is a snippet of my own debug: Code:
