Which guide?

I am starting all over from scratch because I just can't seem to get past the error 1017 when trying to log in to my server.
So, which guide would be the most recommended for a private server that only people in my house will be logging in to?
Is there any guide that has been updated to work the more recent files?

I used this one for my private server, worked great on three different setups, XP, Vista and Win7.
