Could not connect to login server

Hello,

First off, thank you to everyone at EQEMU that has had a hand in making this project a reality.

That said, I just installed EQ Titanium and have appropriately updated the eqhost.txt and Everquest shortcuts as listed in the "Getting Started" Wiki.

Upon starting EQ I get the error "Could not connect to login server" (game doesnt launch).

EQhost.txt has been changed to:
[LoginServer]
Host=eqemulator.net:5998

Now, after searching on google I have found a couple of threads saying that the correct login address is "login.eqemulator.net:5998"

Also, a tracert to eqemulator.net:5998 results in a timeout after like 12 jumps.

My question is which login server address is correct? And if it is indeed login.eqemulator.net:5998 can we get the wiki updated?

Thanks

EDIT: apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I did not see a support section to post in.

Have you tried the FAQ in my sig? The getting started guide is correct and that first one you tried should work just fine. If you are not playing from your home network, the network you are on may be blocking the ports required to play EQ (like if you go through a proxy). If you manage your own home network, then that shouldn't be the case.

The other possible cause could be the client you installed. If you patched it to Live at all, or if you are using an illegal download, it may not be the actual Titanium client. You can check that by referring to the client version details in the getting started wiki near the top. If you installed Titanium from the retail CDs, you should not be having the issue you are having. If you didn't install it from the retail CDs, then you may be running a different client than you think and may need to use port 5999 instead of 5998.

Finally, the last possible cause is that your eqhost.txt file isn't saving your changes. If you are on Vista or Windows 7, UAC doesn't like you changing files manually in the program files folder. You can either disable UAC or move your EQ folder out of program files and try agian. Also, make sure you don't have any extra carriage returns or spaces at the end of the lines in your eqhosts.txt file, as that can cause issues.

And just to be sure, make sure you created your shortcut to eqgame.exe and NOT everquest.exe.

Also, I moved your thread to the appropriate section.

Thanks

Thank you trevius, your reply has shed a little bit of light on the issue.

A few follow up questions/information:
1) I am using EQ titanium, retail, fresh install, has not patched. I changed the eqhost.txt file before launching anything so nothing should have been patched.

2) I am accessing the game from home, meaning a linksys router, cable modem. I also placed an exception in Windows firewall for Everquest.

3) eqhost.txt is in fact saving changes. If I go and reopen the file, my changes are there. Im running Windows XP sp3.

4)"And just to be sure, make sure you created your shortcut to eqgame.exe and NOT everquest.exe." This I am not sure of, and could be my problem. I will check this when I get home from work.

Also I am a little curious why the tracert to eqemulator.net:5998 timed out. I was thinking either the URL was wrong/outdated or the login server was down. Judging from yoru response, the URL is correct and the login server should be up which leads me to wonder why I was getting a timeout on the tracert (command prompt tracert). The tracert 'hopped' to outside of my ISP which makes me think it is not a port/firewall issue on my end.

Again, thanks for the reply (and moving my thread).

PS: I did read your FAQ last night for a good deal of time, but none of the questions in that FAQ really fit my problem as I am unable to even get to the login/server select screen

Solved

My shortcut was pointing to everquest.exe and not eqgame.exe. Should have read the player guide more carefully. Thank you.
