Blank server selection in high latency or low bandwidth connections

I've been noticing lately an issue with the login server in high latency or low bandwidth connections, or if you have poor wireless strength.
When you login to the eqemu login server you get blank server select screen instead of seeing the servers.
If you continue to retry eventually you get the server list.

This problem only started to occur recently, any idea on how to fix this? Some times it can take up to 5 mins and multipule retry's just to log in.

are you using the launcher?

That happens to me as well when my bandwidth is Macedonia from downloads. I do not use the launcher but I do use wineq.

Problem is getting worse and worse.

I simply cannot login because of my wireless situation.


I'm almost positive that the blank sever list is due to high latency or low bandwidth connections.


Is connection pooling enabled on the login server? Can we get some kind of response back on performance issues as Im not the only one experiencing this problem.

Connection pooling? EverQuest uses UDP traffic which is fire and forget there is no 'connection'. As far as the database connection pooling that is not the problem here. It is a defect in the server listing and likely manifests in high latency because keep alive packets may be screwing up the flow of data.

Also the best way to avoid this problem right now is to use the public EQEmuLS if you host your own server. If the server is hosted by another admin you might be able to convince them to do a cross integration (very few will probably do that though).

I also am having this problem. for a whole year i connected fine. it seems this problem comes and goes. i also have comcast.ill go over whats happening.

90% of the time i connect to the server select screen, there are no servers shown, it is blank. i would have to connect 20 or so times before i can successfully get to the character select screen. (there are also a few errors that may pop up in this connection process, and sometime when i get to the character select screen, it tells me my spell file is out dated.. i have to disconnect and start over.)

once i'm finally on the server, there is about a 70% chance i will zone crash and be back to a blank server screen for another 20 logins.

this seems like a fairly common problem from what i'v read. im sure theres a fairly simple fix.

Same problem with some wifi at hotels. Some work some don't all over Africa/Europe with varying signal and rate. The signal strength and transfer rate don't seem to be a factor as it works in different signal strengths as much as it doesn't, same with rate. Some hotels wifi just doesn't allow me to see a server list on eqemu.

Not really. WiFi and even wired internet provided by any company outside your home is liable to have both incoming and outgoing ports restricted to the most common ones, for security.

The ports that EQEmu uses are not among those most common ones.

You could technically ask hotel tech support if there's a way to enable your device to utilize all outgoing ports. It's possible they have a way of allowing it by MAC address. Not likely, though.
