I am running my own server its up right now (Eternal Hate) however I am also playing from the same machine and the lag is just insane.

For those that might attempt to flame me click the search and type LAG and you will get the message I received about word was too short blah blah blah

Hi hi, you shouldnt play on the same machine you host the server on, because it will take too much of the system resources away from your server to give to EQ, because of the way the Client is written up, it draws (at least) 200 megs of ram, and since your server need (all servers) need as much as they can get, thats 200 less for the server, not counting the processing power it takes for EQ, it (benchmarked) takes about 88% of your processor, so playing EQ on the same machine as your server is hosted, is um, well a big NO NO if you dont want major lag spikes....

If you're attempting to run EQ on the same machine you're running the server, this might help (needs Win2K or XP and EQW):

Run EQ.
CTRL+ALT+DELETE and go into the task manager.
Look for EQGAME.EXE, rightclick, go Priority->BelowNormal.
Look for WORLD.EXE, rightclick, go Priority->AboveNormal or High.
Look for each instance of ZONE.EXE, rightclick, go Priority->AboveNormal or High.

If EQ lags TOO much, you can try setting its priority back to normal, however leave the world\zone processes running at a higher priority.

This helps a TON when I'm running a server and EQ on the same machine, since DirectX tries to use all possible system resources when running, and the emu ends up lagging\disconnecting a lot.

Yeah, depending on your processor you can set EQ's priority to "low" and it will run completely fine, with no lag. EQ has a loop in it to make eqgame.exe take all of the CPU. My assumption is that it is an extra addition to discourage EQw programs, so that running anything else is to slow to be worth it. Because awhile ago on test server, they had a version of eqgame.exe, that always ran on my computer around 20-30% of my CPU. But hey you know, depends on your processor.

No it's nothing they put in specifically, Lyenu. DirectX be default uses all resources available when running to ensure maximum performance. Manually lowering the priority overrides it and allows other programs to use resources more freely.

Is there a way to make a shortcut default to run at above average priority? would make things easier... i thought i remembered there being an option like that on xp...
