Tethering

So I use my T-mobile data plan on my phone to play EQ because I live in the country side and the internet out here really sucks. I also recently took a 2 month bicycle trip and was able to play EQ without a hitch using my data plan. Now that I am back at home and try to use my data plan, I either get the "A connection to the server canot be made" message or 1/10 tries I can get to the server selection, but I can't see any servers. 1/100 tries I am able to see the servers and login and play. If anyone else tethers and is having the same problem please post in here. Maybe our service decided to not let us play EQ anymore. This is highly frustrating.

Edit: I also have tried going to a friends house and connected just fine using his ISP.

Sounds like hardcore packet loss. The only thing you can do is contact TMobile and see if they can do anything on their end.

Make sure you are doing it on a 3G connection at least, or else the latency will be too bad. Also, make sure you haven't gone over your data cap or it'll go right back to lower speeds and throttled speeds if you're with TMobile.

If you have the money, invest in unlimited 4G data for EQ if it's your only connection to the net. This should let you watch youtube, etc, without hitting the data cap.

Another thing to consider is the brand of phone you are tethering off of. I was able to play, albeit at 800ms ping, on a shitty old Nokia phone 4-5 years ago with TMobile because nothing was running in the background. You may want to disable the automatic retrieval of texts and emails while tethering.

Another option is to try USB tethering if your phone supports it. It could help alleviate the packet loss you receive by directly connecting you to the phone.

I regularly travel with my Surface Pro and cellphone wifi tether using TMobile near the Philadelphia/Tri-State area, and rarely drop signal except when I switch cell towers while playing EQ. Sometimes, though, TMobile has to do something on their end to fix it when I have an issue. Wouldn't hurt to call at least.

This. I have T-Mobile as well and have used their LTE at work at times due to my work having horrible wireless internet. Yes, it is pretty fast, but if you are capped at 1GB of data, then you are through that 1GB after MAYBE 10 1Hour sessions. After this cap, you're data is throttled SIGNIFICANTLY, so check to see if you went over your cap (if you have one; unlimited is available I believe, but it isn't cheap...)

Ok so I did go over my cap but I bought a 7 day 1 gig pass and have only used .3 of that so far. Also I get a solid 4g lte connection. I guess I will be making that call. I saw another post on here about someone who tethers also saying they have the same problems

I know those feels. Used to live in the boonies where we couldn't get high speed internet. I tried Satellite and it sucked so bad I swapped to Dial-up. While I don't recommended browsing the internet with it, it is plenty to play EQ with.

You know, considering EQ was developed to play on 56k :)

UPDATE: Still not able to log in but only 1/35 or so tries. Ad only from 4pm-midnight. I called T-mobile, and they said they cant do anything about it....it's sad to call the specialists.

Very angry. She did mention that eqemu could have updated their software....but is this true?

Lord_Snow 12-30-2014 02:25 AM

Also I have a 7gb data plan. Any techies out there? or any other T-mobile users having the same issue?

same situation, I had another thread going about this as well:
http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/showthread.php?t=39045

I tether from T-mobile, not unlimited plan but I've never even come close to maxing it.

^^^ I seriously think this is most likely the case, I was having no issues before November 2014, eqemu must've done something because out of freaking no where I have massive connection issues. T-mobile didn't change a thing, I called them as well.

Before Nov 2014 I could connect/disconnect whenever at all hours of the day with no issues. After Nov 2014 if I try and connect after 4-5pm PST it takes me a good 10-15 minutes of blank server select screens with the occasional "out of date spells" character screen.

Please Dev's, whatever you did please undo it so we can play the game again!
