I have been lurking around a bit, considering making a server.

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of bandwidth used, as many VM hosts will charge by bandwidth used.

Sorry, I may not have been clear. I read that document, it's great, but it talks about the bandwidth you need, as in how fat a pipe, the constant and burst rate, but not the actual amount of gig transferred. That is more for the 'set it up at your house' methods of running a server.

If you look at various Cloud hosting providers, they will charge you for the amount of bandwidth consumed in transferred GB. The idea is that you should not have to worry about the fatness of your pipe, they will scale to accommodate that, they will give you a burst up to infinity, since it's Microsoft, or Amazon and their bandwidth is insanely high, but what they will charge you for is usage.

For example some actual Azure pricing:

5 GB - 10 TB 2 /Month
Zone 1: $0.087 per GB
Zone 2: $0.138 per GB
Zone 3: $0.181 per GB

This is a charge for the amount of data transfer.

I hope this clarifies my actual question. I know that people mentioned running on Azure, so they may know... They may have never even used their free data transfer, but they may be able to see how much they use for what users they have.

Ah, gotcha. Hopefully someone has logs to check.

Just going by the 1Mbps talk, by my calculator, streaming at that rate as a constant average 24/7 would add up to 327 GB/mo in a 31-day month.

Yeah - I was wondering about that too.

I used to run webservers, and our actual consumption of data transfer was usually so tiny we didn't worry about it.

I'm imagining that this is probably a touch more than a text chat server, and I don't have experience with that, so I am not able to estimate very accurately.

I found a reference to less than a kilobyte a second for an MMORPG of this era. I did calcs on this and it seems like a pretty heavy player might be around 0.036 GB/ mo. so that puts 100 pretty heavy players at 3.6 GB / mo which is under the 'freebie' limit of Azure.

However I pulled that totally outta my butt. That said... it seems that I could at least get testing up without any data transfer cost.

Yeah, he's actually wanting to know about typical total monthly traffic consumption as opposed to average bandwidth use.

Akkadius 08-13-2015 04:31 PM

Can still get a rough idea off of that information.

Only way you're going to know is check the meter after running your server for a month.

Nagafen's Lair was running 40+ people for 6 months so I got a good average of how much data and traffic was being used (I have WAN op devices that track the classes).

Over a month it was approimately 6Gb of data for that many users.

On the times we have 60+ constant it'd be close to 7-8Gb of data for that month.

In all reality, most of the data was spent reloading zones and normal dev tasks.

Cool, thanks so much Maze.

I actually was thinking that maintenance could be one of the more expensive things I did on the server.

That is great, thanks again...
