Can't Get Past Character Creation - Ultra Fast FPS
Hi everyone. I've spent the better part of my weekend trying to get EQ running on my PC. I've run into a lot of issues that I believe have affected others as well. I actually managed to get my own server up and running, I just never expected the client running correctly to be the hard part.
I have tried using dgVooDoo and Ryzen Master to slow down my computer and cap the FPS so the game is playable, but that hasn't worked. Having an AMD CPU is probably a big part of my issue, and I'm hoping SOMEONE has any advice I haven't yet tried. FWIW, I did manage to create one character by spam clicking into PEQ's server, but it immediately crashed my desktop upon entering the world. :p Summary of the problem: “Character creation and game UI animate way too fast—characters twitch, menus stutter, game is almost unusable.” Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 (also has AMD Radeon iGPU) OS: Windows 11 Home (latest updates) RAM: 32GB Client: RoF2 client (downloaded via PEQ’s recommended method, patched with DoN) dgVoodoo settings: vSync ON, D3D TnL device OFF, Output API “Best available one” Nvidia settings: Framerate cap set, vsync ON, using GPU 1 Other fixes tried: Compatibility modes, Ryzen Master underclock, running as admin, sound tweaks, eqclient.ini maxfps setting, etc. What works: dgVoodoo watermark appears, can hear music, but game is hyper fast. |

Feel free to click the link above to see what this looks like. just really fast, twitchy player. UI sometimes detects clicks, usually not. |
Of course I find the fix legit 5 minutes after I post this. Such is life.

Just for the sake of sharing answers... it's nearly 3 a.m. and I finally fixed my final issue.
For some reason, all of my windows were stopping all rendering when unfocused. At first, I thought it was an isboxer issue. But it was also affecting the default client. So I went down a rabbit hole of video card settings and .dll installations and doing all sorts of nonsense trying to fix it. Turns out... the PEQ Macroquest build has a MaxFPS setting on unfocused windows that overrides everything else. Bah! So, problem solved. I am in the world again. But I just wanted to drop this little tip somewhere so that, in the future, maybe someone reads a forum post and solves and issue. |
