did you compile the login server from source code? Where did you get the source code from?

Zeitgeist 02-18-2002 09:19 AM

and what if yours is down? :o people wanna know! :D Did you just get the source from the login server that was released to compile with some hacking or what?

Yodason 02-18-2002 02:36 PM

she made some changes to the src.

Could you share a copy with others? Some people might want to create thier own login servers so we can enjoy 24/7/365 uptime for everyone. I got a T1 line I would love to share with others by creating a login / world server on it. Just reply with a link to the new login server software please.

-Thanks

I'm not a female Yoda! Jerle be an elvish name

Yes I compiled off the source code.. but i'm hesitant to divulge the location.. I get the impression the devs want to keep it rather.. obscure.. so they're not pestered with "My login server doesn't work"

Evil.. I'll send you a private message with a url as to where you can download the linux binaries

Jerle as in Voyage of the Jerle Shannara?

Trumpcard 02-19-2002 12:26 AM

login server idea..

Im wondering if a good way of handling this might be coming up with a few different login servers, then making a quick VB frontend that wil ping/test the connection to the login servers from a list file, then give you a green light on each one and adjust the eqhost.txt file accordingly based on your loginserver choice, it could even launch eqlogin, or just run eqw or eqgame patchme at that point. Almost a slightly modified version of eqlogin that would check the login servers first. That way if one was down, you have the choice of a couple of others. You could make it easy to add new login servers so whoever wanted to host one could just post the name/ip, and it could be added to the lookup list.

We can come up with some type of workaround, but we're not going to have the kind of uptime that Verant has, and its not good to take down all online access when one server goes down.

Just an opinion.

We've been toying with a distributed loginserver model. This way we'd have fault tolerance so no downtime.

Baltar 02-19-2002 04:16 AM

hehe a login server for a login server...j/k

Minara 02-19-2002 05:55 AM

Yes Trumpcard.. I ripped the name off bad :) And I think the distributed login server would be pretty nifty. Get crackin' Pyro!

Cool name ! I just got finished reading Antax a few weeks ago, it was definitely a departure from his other books, going back to old world technology... Very odd if you ask me, it really didnt feel like a Shannara novel.. Reminded me more of Superman2 where the computer sucked in the bad guy's sister and turned her into a cyborg.. Kinda freaky..

As far as the distributed model goes , its definately a step in the right direction, there are a few different ways to go with this one. Ive leave it up to the dev team to decide how they'd like to do it, but I've got a few different ideas on this one..

Yodason 02-19-2002 08:52 AM

Its distributed with the src, but I personally feel if you can't do the fix you shouldn't run login =p

Zeitgeist 02-19-2002 08:59 AM

No offense but that's the most asinine thing you've ever said Yoda. I understand the reasoning as we don't need 1,000,000 people who can't even get the emu running to be overrunning the site with questions about the login server, but... at the same time how many people here could code their own emu? exactly, and that's why they are using eqemu.
