Illegal operation error

I can connect to the server login screen, but whenever I click on a server and try to connect, the screen goes blank and then comes up with a message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." Anyone know why? I've tried everything. I am using Windows XP if it helps.

I can tell you at least that XP works as a client. I think eqw works better, but I've had success with both.
