One of the major issues with this idea that hasn't even been mentioned yet is the possibility for exploits. Since you aren't authenticating at the login server again, you don't need a password, and that means that someone could potentially find a way to log in characters/accounts on other servers that they do not own and most importantly GM accounts. It just isn't worth that kinda risk. This would be a bit too much hassle for it to be worth the effort IMO.
I do think that some kinda combined effort between servers would be cool, but I am sure there are probably better ways of doing it. The hard part is finding something that everyone can agree with. It would be awesome to see some kinda Frankenstien custom server that had many people working on it, but without a VERY strict guideline for the content of that, it would be nearly impossible to make anything well-balanced and consistent quality. I think PEQ works well because they all have a common ground to agree on and work towards. But, you get devs working on custom servers and they all want to shoot for the sky lol. Can you imagine King Mort, Jibbatwinkers, Hunter, Spider, me and all of our dev teams all working on 1 server together? That would be a nightmare lol.
