The problem you're describing with logging into the same account probably originates from the fact that you are using Minilogin. In a minilogin setup, your IP address is bound to a specific account - so regardless of what account you log into, the database knows to associate your IP with the specific account that you added during setup.
To change this you would either have to a) have more than one computer to get more than one account b) stop using minilogin and just use the eqemulator login server or c) alter your database so that your IP address is now bound to a new account.
With regards to your advice request -
I run a server from my house for myself and a few friends scattered away at college for development of our project. I run minilogin, though I have it running via the internet instead of LAN. My external IP is masked by a DNS service similar to no-ip.org, and the serving machine simply has ports forwarded and firewall off.
I wouldn't be terribly concerned about security if you want to use a setup similar to mine as it does not run in any way through eqemulator.net.
