If you don't need to use Linux then Windows is much more friendly to a novice.

Without knowing which Linux distribution it would be hard to give any advice, other than to do some research on which package manager you are using and learning how to determine what software you have installed already and how to install new software with it.

You might also provide a link to the guide you're using, since there are many and guessing isn't likely to be productive.
