Someone from around here, if I am not mistaken mentioned about using the "System Restore Point" that is part of Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows .NET. All you have to do, is create a snapshot of your machine before patching in case you mess up, and update. You can restore your settings back to previously.
I have mine setup like this so I can keep one up to date, and the other one for EQEmu Servers.
EQEmu Servers:
C:\Program Files\EverQuest
EverQuest Servers:
C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest Trilogy
I also wrote a program a while ago, that I started to play around with recently, to avoid updating -- simlar to that of EQW, but it uses the original client. Has a few little things here and there, but who knows? Some like it, some don't like it. In case you are interested in it, you can read the following thread at:
