There's a similar issue with bots (they do share some of the same code/behavior.)
Bots, however, do (did) not allow a non-owner to invite them.
The guy who normally works on these has not been on in awhile..so, I don't know when this can or will be addressed.
There are some other issues as well..and that's why mercs are disabled by npc_type in the peq database daily dump.
