So long as the current patched version of eq runs with the current emu (and I believe it does) - uninstall your installation of the eq client, and reinstall it from cd's and repatch it... then replace the eqhost.txt contents again and see what happens.
If nothing else at all, if you try to connect to verant's servers (as if you were playing eq for real) the client will automatically download an eqhost.txt (the proper one for connecting to Verant servers) and at least that way you know you have it, and have it installed to the right place.
