Default Akk-stack on VirtualBox

I have been trying for the past three days or so to get a server installed on a VirtualBox VM using akk-stack.

For some reason the networking on VM's is such absolute crap I can't get through the install process:
1. The code pull takes about 45 minutes, but is successful
2. The maps pull fails because it takes too long, I have to manually download on host and scp them over to pass this step.
3. opensll seems to take too long to download as well and fails the install.

I have tried everything I can think of to optimize networking inside the VM. The linux distro is not the problem, i've tried 7 different distros.

Has anyone gotten this to work in a VM?

it's not my ISP. I did this on my laptop in about 5 minutes. It's the VM. I'm not sure if it might be the VirtualBox version.

i'm tempted to see if WSL would work.
