[sarcasm]It's easy! Search google for "emulator easybake oven". Double click it, point it to the folder with the program needing server emulation, and wait 15 minutes. Sit down and you've got an emulator!!![/sarcasm]

Writing a FFXI emulator would take you months, assuming you actually had the knowledge and the time to focus. The encryption and packetsniffing isn't too easy, but you'd have to know how to do that so that you could know what packets do what. Basically, if you are a killer at programming, learn about networks and you'll be fine!

Maintaining the eqemu emulator has taken over six months just for one encryption update. So if you want something "not quite as complex as eqemu", you're still looking at a long time.
