I can login with my 5.5 compatible client (eqgame.exe dated 30/03/2004). The people who are having problems logging in have probably patched more recently and thus can only login to version 5.6 servers. I tested with my 5.6 compatible client as well and you can get to character select, but you get kicked when entering the world.
