Ubuntu - Loaded Question?

Good Day!

I know there has been much talk over this subject, and i do apologize if i seem to repeat this question, but i could not find the answer in witch i search for.

I am a green belt when it comes to Linux, and I have chosen Ubuntu Server 7.10. Off of my research, it is best to run a server without a GUI, less resources are taken.

I am asking for some assistance here on what is recommended, GUI or no GUI for a emu Server? and if not, some assistance on were to start :-p

No GUI will obviously free up more resources on the server and for running the emu and you really do not need a GUI for any real administrative purposes so I would recommend no GUI. However, it is all up to personal preference and you can always install a GUI later if you want to.

IMO, it really depends on if you're going to be working on the server itself. If you are, GUI can make things a lot easier, especially if you prefer dragging & dropping & multiple windows/desktops over commands.

For me personally, I run a server with no keyboard, mouse, or monitor (except when I first installed the OS). I then do everything remotely through FTP, Samba (file sharing), SSH, and web-based utilities like Webmin. This allows me to access what I need to even if I'm not at the desktop (laptop or remotely via the Internet for example). This also makes it easier if you start expanding your horizons & bring other people in to help with the server, because you don't have to do all of that down the line. And like sesmar said, it frees up quite a few resources that can be saved for your clients.

On a side note, I'm a little more partial to Debian. Aptitude (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aptitude_(program)) ftw!

Here's one (http://www.eqemulator.net/wiki/wikka.php?wakka=DebianLinuxServer) I put in the Wiki using Debian as the installation platform. There's still a few areas that I need to add information about (mainly sourcing the database), but it covers a lot of the main areas.

I created it while installing the Emu the past few times, so it's pretty much a step-by-step guide.
