Default Dreamhost Private Server

I hate posts that start out with "OK this is a total newb post, but...", but this is one of those.

I know my way around minilogin server setup, and I know a little bit about toying with MySQL to modify the db and so forth. I have a Dreamhost account for other projects, and I was wondering if I signed up for their private hosting package w/ MySQl, if I could install my server to that box and run it from there. Does that make sense?

Essentially I want to convert my minilogin to public and host it on my webhost's box.

Webhosting is not the same as dedicated hosting for gaming servers. You would need telnet access to the server for one thing :P

Yeah, I know that, and it's available. Command-line linux is, anyway. What else should I look for?

Dreamhost would end up making you purchase a dedicated server, as your EQEmulator server would undoubtedly take up too much resources in a virtual/shared environment.

I see...I see. I'll look up their dedicated server package. What are other people using to host their servers? Or is everyone just running a box in the closet or whatever.

Most just run theirs at home. If you can get a 1MB upload speed to your house, then you should be able to handle up to 120ish players at a time.

I run mine from home and wouldn't have it any other way. Though I would love to have more upload speed!
