I hope somewhere there is somebody working on a FFXI emu... My understanding is that the japanese already have this down... I would love to see that.

Meh, FFXI doesnt have as many items, armor, weapons, and monsters as EQ has, plus the set limit of item carrying sucks, lol. I'd perfer a DAoC emu, that one will deff beat FFXI emu.

For a DAoC emu visit

Name is "Dawn of Light". Haven't tested it myself, so I don't know how far they are.

FFXI is the worst MMORPG I've ever played.

This is coming from SquareSoft's number one fanboy. When I was 13, I wrote them a letter asking what language they wrote code in so I could learn.

* You can't pick which server to join on startup - you are randomly placed on one.
* One character per account (PERIOD), unless you want to fork over more cash
* Forget soloing, you must group in this game.
* EQ Int casters: forget all the fun stuff you ever learned in EQ. There's no kiting in this game. Position self in front of mob and whack away. First to lose all HP loses.
* Be ready to take massive amounts of painful exp loss deaths. When you die, you must either hope someone is nearby to rez, or take the loss. There is no corpse to drag around asking for a rez, you must either decide to take the loss or wait 60 minutes in the hopes a white mage walks over your corpse. Waiting is lots of fun...
* Mobs lack intelligence. Severely.
* The interface is clunky .. very clunky. In the US, it's a straight port from PS2->PC, but they forgot that PC != PS2.
* Patches are every 3-4 weeks, and normally take 6 hours .. DURING US PRIMETIME. Joy.
* Signing onto the service is more painful than pulling teeth. I won't explain it all, just be ready to memorize 8 random alphanumeric characters as your "station name".
* I see no PvP or RP-preferred servers

This game probably won't last past the free month trial for me. If you are playing, look for Merth on the Bahamut server. I have no clue how to do a /who all or a ;tell server.name in FFXI, and probably won't stick around to find out.

I hear those complaints alot.... I also hear that it is the greatest mmorpg ever.... I haven't played it yet... I intend to buy it for pc and get my free 30 days... if it sucks no big. At this point if they write final fantasy on a roll of toilet paper i am obligated to purchase it... even if i dont have an @ss ..... which i do.... probably.

I herd it only costs $1.50 a month... is that true?

Sounds like a POS game if you ask me. Merth pointed out some crucial points that say the game isnt great such as..

one character per account
must group ( I love soloing )
no PVP

Like.. 9 people I know waited so long for it and told me the week before it was the longest week ever.

Most of them quit after the first few days.

After describing your points to my girlfriend, Merth, she no longer wishes to play it. She'd rather be a dancer in Star Wars than be forced to group with jackasses and stand still and be randomly placed on a server.

That combination ruins 99% of what she had hoped to do.

I made it official tonight: My free trial account has been cancelled after one week of play.

Me and Image had this argument about Final Fantasy the other night, so i'll post my comments here.

I started playing Final Fantasy I on the original version on the Nintendo MANY years ago, played the first 3, and really enjoyed them.

Years pass by, I play FF6. Story line has gotten weirder, and less cohesive, but it was kind of fun.

FF8. Tried it , dropped it really quick..

FFX. Bought this for the PS/2 on the recommendation of some friends kids. PLayed it for about 3 hours, and other than very nice graphics, I think its the crappiest attempt at a game i've ever seen. There are almost zero options in combat other than i whack->you whack->he whacks --- (anyone die? N) --> I whack -> you whack ....................
I understand the japanese dont think like we do, and often their stories dont make alot of sense to us americans (80% of anime in my opinion), but there is no discernable direction in the entire game!! It really feels like a completely random and unconnected plot....

Plus. the visual skill upgrade system requires a civil engineering degree to navigate through.. I thought I was going to have to hire a draftsman..

Image jumped on me with my blanket FInal Fantasy sucks statement because I didnt like anything after 6 (this coming from the guy that buys i piece of equipment from a computer company, has problems with it, and then broadcasts onward that their hardware sucks!! LOL) , but am I alone in my feeling that the entire storyline and actually playability of the game has just continously dropped ??

Admittedly, I havent played every single one, but I've noticed the trend... Now dont go flakey on me and freak out because I dont like it, but I'm an OLD school rpg'er, the coolest RPG's in my mind are probably ones you guys have never even heard of, Wizards Crown, Phantasy, Shard of Spring, Xyphus.. Best game ever? ELITE, hands down!

I guess I just don't 'get' them...

I remember when I was about 6, we had a famicom, and we played dorakue (butchered japanese for dragon quest, or the American game dragon warrior), dragon ball, and final fantasy, along with junk sports games and miniyunku (japanese toy race cars).

The final fantasy game is 85% the same game as it was prior to 1990. They just hire better graphics designers. We went from Cid the pixel map to Cid picture to Cid the humanoid video clip. I like the original gameplay, if only because it's a friendly, familiar style. I liked up to 6 more than I liked the new ones. They lost the familiar feeling. I DID like 9. I thought the story was fun.

Anime has lost its appeal 100% for me. I saw it for 10 years growing up. The stories get worse and the drawings get better. Why are we still watching Dragon Ball? It was groundbreaking in the late 80's! It's because the other stuff didn't survive. To be honest, I'm glad we didn't get Doraemon over here, and I'm sad that Pikachu and pocket monster crap made it over...

They had some brilliant shows that they just can't bring over because they wouldn't make ANY sense to an American who didn't grow up with Japanese influence... Then again, Pikachu... I stand corrected.

Being of a Japanese culture doesn't make this stuff any better. I think it's just that they have limited Japanese shows that really push the envelope. Ultraman and Godzilla and Dragon Ball don't happen every decade.

After Final Fantasy 6, I would think it would finally be final.

Trump hit the nail on the head with the discernable direction, most of the newer RPGs consist of about 20% Actual Plot and 80% finding something.

I sure do miss the older RPGs...
Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 1/2/3, Shining Force 2...

Although FF7 wasent too bad

PlayOnline Nets 400,000 Subscribers

Square Enix has racked up 430,000 subscribers to its PlayOnline online gaming service worldwide, the publisher announced at its midterm press conference today. The service, which powers Square's MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, broke through the 400,000 user mark approximately 18 months after its Japanese debut in May 2002.
The recent release of Final Fantasy XI for the PC in the United States of course provided a significant boost to the service's user base. Square Enix said it has shipped around 200,000 copies of the PC version to the US market already, and picked up around 100,000 new subscribers so far.

The boost to FFXI's player base provided by the American version brings it into the highest echelon of MMORPG popularity. It's now surprisingly close to Sony Online Entertainment's market-leading EverQuest, which claims a base of more than 500,000 subscribers.

Of course, FFXI hasn't even been out in the US for a full month yet. As soon as we're past the first month, they'll find a lot of people that didn't continue beyond the free trial.

I've noticed *while we're on console ff topic* that most of the newer ones tend to build up character development with a thin plot that eventually connects to the main thing about 5 hours in or so (of a 40 hour game). The older ones were kinda dumbed down for US audiences anyway. FF4 was a great game with a great plot, and yet, it also took awhile to build into the actual plot (like 20 mins if you play like I did and level up at the beginning). Secret of mana series was great... when I could hold my attention span long enough to concentrate on the massive jumping around in the things I had to do. (speaking of which, I am playing sword of mana on gba as we speak)
I'd go on, but I think I'll hold off on the riot causing ff debates now :)
-Kai

:EDIT:
FF XII looks good so far... tho I don't know why they finally connected a couple games together (it's in Ivalice [home of Final Fantasy Tactics]) Course, I am not too sure if it has a solid plot yet either, which is the only reason I play RPGs to begin with.
